Kelly Clarkson Has Been Awarded Primary Physical Custody Of Her Kids, And She And Her Ex Might Be Fighting A Lot

Anyone who has ever gotten divorced before can probably tell you that fighting is a part of splitting up, just as much as trying to coordinate schedules for meetings with your divorce lawyer, or deciding who gets the vacuum. But in this case, the fighting might be getting messy messy. Or at least messy enough to possibly be causing the type of post-split problems that would result in Kelly Clarkson getting awarded primary physical custody of her kids she shares with her ex, Brandon Blackstock.

Kelly filed for divorce back in June, after seven years of marriage to Reba McEntire’s one-time stepson. Friends were reportedly so shocked that Kelly was calling it quits with Brandon, saying that Kelly and Brandon were always together and seemed like such a loving family. Another source said that any marriage issues Kelly and Brandon had were made about a million times worse while being stuck together in quarantine. And it sounds like things didn’t get better between Kelly and Brandon after they decided to quarantine in other houses as soon-to-be single people.

According to a document filed last month in Los Angeles County, a judge has determined that Kelly should be granted primary physical custody of their kids River Rose (6), and Remington Alexander (4). via People:

“The Court finds that under the circumstances present in this case, the interest in providing stability and continuity for the minor children weighs in favor of Petitioner [Kelly Clarkson] having primary custody…The level of conflict between the parents has increased. The parties have a difficult time co-parenting due to issues of trust between them.”

People says that Kelly will now allow Brandon, who plans to live in Montana, to visit River and Remington at Kelly’s home in Los Angeles. That explains the primary physical custody decision. Kelly has to film her TV show in LA, and Brandon is a music manager who has decided to work out of Montana. Kelly has said that her primary goal in all of this is to protect her kids’ “little hearts,” and to be perfectly honest, keeping them in one place seems like the smartest idea. A 50-50 physical split would mean jetting back and forth multiple times a week, and eventually one of those kids is going to break and beg that Mommy and Daddy figure something out, because they’re getting real sick of complimentary Sierra Mist and Biscoff cookies. People adds that Kelly and Brandon will share joint physical and legal custody, which means decisions are 50-50, and visits can happen at agreed-upon times.

There’s still that part about there being a level of conflict between Kelly and Brandon. Brandon has what I like to call Applebee’s Parking Lot Fight You Eyes, so of course I assumed he hasn’t been able to avoid starting divorce drama. But that document specifically states they have trust issues and they’re both engaging in conflict. But it sounds like they’re not letting their personal brawling spill over onto the kids too much. According to the documents filed, Kelly granted Brandon permission to take the kids for Thanksgiving, and he’ll get a week before Christmas as well. I guess it could be worse? Let’s be grateful that it hasn’t gotten to the point in the country song where Daddy won’t be home for Christmas because Mommy will sic the family bloodhound on him if she so much as catches a whiff of his truck exhaust in the driveway.
