Britain’s Culture Secretary Wants Netflix To Make It Clear That “The Crown” Is Fiction

The Crown. It very pretty. It kinda boring. I mostly fast-forwarded to the scenes with Princess Diana (played by Emma Corrin). Diana is portrayed as sympathetic, lonely, and very young. Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) is depicted as a stuffy old cheater who never loved his wife to begin with (um, fact?). This season has reignited interest in their shitty marriage and the Royal Family as a whole. And Britain’s Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, believes it has damaged their reputations.

He told The Daily Mail:

‘It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that,’ he told The Mail on Sunday.

‘Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.’

Oliver is expected to write into Netflix (OMG, a letter?!!) to ask that they include “health warnings” at the start of every episode that say: “this shit is made up, long live the Queen!”

A friend of Prince Charles calls the show “propaganda”:

‘It is quite sinister the way that Morgan is clearly using light entertainment to drive a very overt republican agenda and people just don’t see it. They have been lured in over the first few series until they can’t see how they are being manipulated. It is highly sophisticated propaganda.’

Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, told ITV:

‘It would help The Crown an enormous amount if at the beginning of each episode it stated that, ‘This isn’t true but is based around some real events’. Because then everyone would understand it’s drama for drama’s sake.’

Awww, someone’s just sore because they left him out of the series! Actress Emma Corrin previously commented on the fact that many of the show’s scenes were not historically accurate on Tamron Hall’s show:

‘It’s a difficult one,’ she replied. ‘I think for everyone in The Crown we always try and remind everyone that… the series we are in is fictionalised to a great extent.

‘Obviously it has its roots in reality and in some fact but Peter Morgan’s scripts are works of fiction.’

In another interview, she said, “We’re not mimicking. That’s not what we’re doing. This is Peter’s [Peter Morgan, The Crown’s creator] version of what happens.

The Daily Mail thinks The Crown is doing lasting damage to the monarchy. I think Prince Andrew already did a great job of that, but whatever. The article claims the show’s treatment of Prince Philip is “particularly disgraceful”. In the season finale, Philip tells Diana it won’t end well for her if she attempts to leave Charles. She responds, “I hope that isn’t a threat, Sir.” The Daily Mail thinks this moment fuels that rumors that Diana’s death was actually a hit ordered by Philip. Um, that didn’t occur to me at all, but now that the Daily Mail brought it up… *Googles Diana conspiracy theories for the next 3 hours*

Personally, I think Prince Charles should be thanking The Crown. Did you see the hottie they got playing him? He can be my tampon any day of the month! *shudder*
