Netflix Renewed “Emily In Paris” For A Second Season
Emily in Paris has been renewed for a second season. Cut to everybody making a “do you smell dog shit?” face like Lily Collins in the above photo. Apparently the show was a “breakout word-of-mouth hit” for Netflix, with subscribers watching more than 676 million minutes of the show the very first week it was released. I’m not good at math like those election whizzes on CNN, so I’ll just assume those numbers mean a lot of people binged it. Hey, the pandemic has made us all do desperate things. Myself included.
Despite Emily in Paris’ big ratings, the show got mixed reviews from critics and viewers. For many, it was what the kids call a “hate-watch.” Cuz none of it made any sense. Especially after Lily Collins put her dainty nepotism baby foot in her mouth and announced that the highly accomplished Emily was only 22. The show also received backlash from the French press. Local critics bashed the show for perpetuating French stereotypes, painting an unrealistic image of Paris, and the completely absurd plot. The show’s creator, Darren Star (yeah, the Sex and the City dude), defended this choice to the Hollywood Reporter:
“The show is a love letter to Paris through the eyes of this American girl who has never been there,” Star told The Hollywood Reporter as part of a Creative Space interview last month. “The first thing she is seeing is the clichés because it’s from her point of view. I’m not sorry for looking at Paris through a glamorous lens. It’s a beautiful city, and I wanted to do a show that celebrated that part of Paris.”
He also says he’s not sure if the second season will tackle coronavirus (blegh):
“I have ideas but I think it’s a big question mark about what affect that has on the show and the storytelling.”
Oui, Darren, you must maintain the integrity of the program’s precious storylines. Which included: Emily becomes a social media influencer, Emily gets blasted with paint at a fashion show, and Emily fucks a French minor. Golden age of television over here.
This news is especially hard to take after GLOW was unjustly axed right before it’s final season. For shaaaame, Netflix. And here’s the worst part… the Emily writing this article will watch. I know she’ll watch it. She’s not strong enough not to watch. Sigh. #mindthemerde
