Open Post: Hosted By The Time That Dame Judi Dench Gave Her Goldfish Life-Saving Mouth-To-Mouth CPR

October 25, 2020 / Posted by:

Nothing like a weekend story about 85-year-old acting legend, Dame Judi Dench, putting her lips on a big, floppy…fish, and blowing it back to life. There’s a joke in there that I’m just not going to touch (unlike Judi, who would not only touch it but probably slobber all over it!).

People Magazine is going to great lengths to show just how far Dame Judi would go for her pets. Apparently, in a recent episode of the “How to Wow” podcast, hosted by Chris Evans (no, not THAT Chris Evans), the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony-winning thespian opened up about once saving the life of her goldfish, which has since recently died, by giving it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

“This is the first time in my life I haven’t got a cat, a dog, and my goldfish died,” she said. “It’s a very sad story.”

She went further by mentioning the time she fished the thing of its bowl, plopped it onto the counter, and blew into its mouth––despite the fact that fish have gills (oh, Judi!)

“I gave it the kiss of life. It ‘died’ when it was a very, very little goldfish,” she added, noting that fortunately not only did the fish end up surviving, but that it also grew to be “about six inches long…he’s now called Lazarus.””

This wasn’t the first time Judi busted out this miraculous tale. She talked about it back in 2012 on “The Graham Norton Show” and even provided Graham with an update in 2014, claiming that it was still alive.

“This is Lazarus the fish,” asked Norton. “He’s still alive?” “Of course,” Dench replied, “[he’s] still alive as far as I know” although she jokingly added that she hadn’t been home for a day.

Seriously, I did not expect to be typing out the words “Judi Dench” + “mouth-to-mouth” + “six inches long” today, or any day…but there you have it.
