Nicole Kidman Says That She And Tom Cruise Were “Happily Married” While Filming “Eyes Wide Shut”

Um, did Nicole Kidman get wasted during her new interview with the New York Times? Because she actually revealed information about her twelve-year-long marriage to Tom Cruise. Nicole once said she avoids talking about Tom out of respect for current husband Keith Urban (and probably cuz of some effed up Scientologist NDA). But now she’s talking about their time filming Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut between November 1996 and June 1998 (it actually holds the record for the longest constant movie shoot at 400 days). Nicole says that, unlike the troubled couple they play in the movie, she and Tom were “happily married” at the time.

Asked if working on the film brought up any “negative feelings” about her relationship with Cruise, Kidman responded, “We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at 3 in the morning.

“I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”

Hmmm, I’m gonna guess Nicole’s inability to reflect and dissect is the reason she lasted the longest of any of Tom’s wives. See no evil, right?

Nicole also talked about her experience working with Kubrick, who died just after the film was completed (and a few months before it was released):

“We loved working with him. We shot that for two years,” she said. “We had two kids and were living in a trailer on the lot primarily, making spaghetti because Stanley liked to eat with us sometimes. We were working with the greatest filmmaker and learning about our lives and enjoying our lives on set.”

Living in the trailer with two kids? Sounds cramped, especially with Tom’s bulky e-meter and the entire works of L. Ron Hubbard.

Eyes Wide Shut was released in June 1999, and Tom filed for divorce from Nicole in February 2001. It was finalized in August of that same year. We’ve all seen the pictures of Nicole leaving her lawyer’s office:

God, what I wouldn’t give to figure out what happened between go-kart racing and those glorious pap shots. A note to the next journalist who interviews Nicole: bring absinthe.
