Vanessa Bryant Is Not Happy That Her Mom Dragged Her On TV

2020 has been awful for pretty much everyone, and it’s been especially terrible for Vanessa Bryant. And somehow, it has managed to get worse. Vanessa is currently in the middle of a very messy, very sad, very public fight with her mother, Sofia Urbieta Laine. Fighting with your mom is bad enough, but then there’s the added element of what the fight is about. And all the emotions are multiplied by 600 because Sofia chose to air out their drama in an exclusive television interview.

On Monday, Vanessa’s mom Sofia appeared on the Spanish language entertainment television program El Gordo y la Flaca. Univision reports that Sofia claims she was tossed out of the Irvine, California home she was living in (which Vanessa and her late husband Kobe Bryant paid for), and was forced to hand over the keys to her car ASAP (which Vanessa and Kobe also paid for).

Poor Sofia – an elderly grandmother evicted from her home, and not even left with a car to drive to the nearest motel in. Except…that’s not the truth, according to Vanessa. Not long after El Gordo y la Flaca aired their interview with Sofia, Vanessa released a statement and didn’t give Sofia an inch to work with. According to Vanessa, it was never her house and it was never her car to begin with. Vanessa is also calling her mother capital-t TACKY for running to the press and crying about money less than eight months after her own grandchild died. via Page Six:

“My husband and daughter passed away unexpectedly, and yet my mother had the audacity to do a television interview speaking negatively of me while shedding tears for a car and a house that were not in her name. She has removed all her diamond jewelry, emptied the apartment I provided, and put away the furniture to make it look like she doesn’t have my support. My husband and I have supported her financially for the past 20 years, and continue to do so, in addition to her monthly alimony.”

In fact, the only payback Vanessa ever expected from her mom was the support needed to grieve her husband and teenage daughter, and Vanessa alleges Sofia couldn’t even come up with that.

“[Sofia] has not been physically present or emotionally supportive of my daughters or me [since the death of Kobe and 13-year-old Gianna]. Now I see what is most important to my mother and it’s more than painful. I hope that everything that is coming out about our personal relationship ends here.”

Page Six points out there might connection between Sofia’s former home and the current guardians of Natalia, Bianka, and Capri Bryant. TMZ reported several months ago that Erika Williams has been appointed legal guardian for the two older daughters in regards to Kobe’s trust. The home that Sofia was living in has been registered in Erika’s name.

Page Six mentions that it’s not clear what events transpired between Vanessa and Sofia in the past eight months. They were close prior to Kobe and Gianna’s death, as Sofia was often seen courtside at basketball games. After Kobe died, Us Weekly reported that Sofia was Vanessa’s “rock” and that they were “incredibly close.” And according to Vanessa, all those reports about her mom being the metaphorical wind beneath Vanessa’s wings was BS. If Vanessa’s story is the truth, then I don’t know how Sofia can fix this. I think it might be too late to pop by with a casserole. That’s assuming Sofia is even allowed up to the gate. Vanessa’s security guard has probably been given a very detailed description of the little old lady who is not allowed onto the compound. And now that description likely includes a note that she’ll likely be arriving with several suitcases in an Uber.
