Kelly Clarkson Addressed Her Divorce On “The Kelly Clarkson Show” Second Season Premiere

Kelly Clarkson’s famous, wealthy, well-liked, and just an O and a T away from fully EGOT-ing (Daytime Emmys count, OK?!). But our girl’s had a rough past few months. Back in June she filed for divorce from her husband of almost seven years/former Reba McEntire stepson, Brandon Blackstock. This was after the couple and their four kids (River Rose, 6, Remington, 4, and Brandon’s children from his first marriage, Savannah, 18, and Seth, 13) quarantined together in a one-room cabin at their Montana ranch. In retrospect, divorce was the only possible outcome.

Now 38-year-old Kelly’s pulling an Ellen and addressing the elephant in the room on her talk show. The difference is Kelly’s elephant won’t stomp you to death as a “prank” if you make eye contact with it. On the second season premiere of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Kelly said she didn’t see her divorce coming, but she’s putting her kids first and being careful about what she shares publicly.

She told her virtual audience, “2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life. Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came.”

She told her guests, “What I’m dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart. It involves a lot of little hearts. We have four kids.” The Voice judge continued, “And divorce is never easy. And we’re both from divorced families so we know the best thing here is to protect our children and their little hearts.”

Clarkson admitted she’s “usually very open” about her personal life, but in this case, she “probably won’t go too far into it because, you know, I’m a mama bear and my kids come first.”

Kelly says she songwriting as a coping tool when her own parents split, and she’s doing the same thing for her own divorce:

“So I probably won’t speak about it too much, but you definitely will hear it musically probably, that’s how I became a songwriter. Music has always been my outlet to help me get through difficult times and this year, I’ve been listening to a lot of music and I’ve also been writing a lot of music as well.”

So get ready for Kelly’s mom-friendly version of Jagged Little Pill! Here’s her opening monologue about the divorce:

Meanwhile, The Kelly Clarkson Show employed “crowd view” technology for corona-times. Basically they’ve propped up a bunch of monitors on some audience chairs, and fans Zoomed in from home. And because Kelly opened the premiere by covering a bunch of old TV theme songs with help from Bob Saget (????) including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Cheers, and Full House, her audience members included television legends Ed Asner, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, Dave Coulier (speaking of Jagged Little Pill), and Jodi Sweetin. And my cat must be chopping onions somewhere in this tiny apartment, because seeing Ed Asner groovin’ to the Mary Tyler Moore theme via Zoom made my eyes go all wet:
