“Schitt’s Creek” Swept The Emmys To The Delight Of Many (But Not Leslie Jones)

Last night’s Emmys was a Schitt’s storm of epic proportions and I’m not talking about the writing. No, I’m making an obvious and lazy pun based on the fact that Schitt’s Creek swept the show, winning in every comedy category of the night. And because of the order in which the categories were presented, the entire first hour of the broadcast was just creator, writer and star Daniel Levy scrambling to decide whether to leave the mask on or take it off each time his show won an Emmy. Which was 9 times! The show set a record for the “most wins in a single season for a comedy” (per The Hollywood Reporter) and almost everybody was happy for them. Everyone that is except Leslie Jones. Yes, it would seem the rather tall lady from SNL does not enjoy gentle Canadian comedy. It’s weird because hating on Schitt’s Creek is like hating on an adorable kitten with markings that make it look like it has Groucho Marx eyebrows. Who could be mad at that?!

According to THR:

Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek, with its sweep of seven Emmys on Sunday night on the heels of two at the Creative Arts Emmys last week, has established a new record for most wins in a single season for a comedy series.

The show’s nine total wins for its sixth and final season breaks the record of eight that Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in 2018 and matched in 2019.

The Canadian show won prizes for best comedy series, best actor in a comedy series (Eugene Levy), best actress in a comedy series (Catherine O’Hara), best supporting actor in a comedy series (Daniel Levy), best supporting actress in a comedy series (Annie Murphy), best directing for a comedy series (Andrew Cividino and Daniel Levy), best writing for a comedy series (Daniel Levy), best casting for a comedy series (Jon Comerford and Lisa Parasyn) and best contemporary costumes (Darci Cheyne and Debra Hanson).

What no Emmy for Moira’s Wigs, the true stars of the show? What a snub! Also absent was Dan’s sister Sarah Levy, who plays Twyla the waitress on the show. She wasn’t in the big outdoor tent that was set up outside of Toronto with the rest of the cast, but she did watch from home.

She was totally faking surprise on those last couple of takes. Where’s her Emmy? As for Leslie, any enthusiasm she had to the Emmys when she announced the nominees back in July, seems to have completely evaporated.

Leslie went on to say “I didn’t even say that show in my post. I was just bored people just jump to conclusions,” which is very true! The conclusions I jumped to were that she is either doing a  Debbie Downer: Revisited bit that never made it to air on SNL, or she’s worried that Schitt’s Sweep might overshadow her upcoming reboot of Supermarket Sweep like there’s some kind of high-stakes Sweeps Thunderdome situation we are all unaware of. But hey, she didn’t hate everything about last night. Apparently, Leslie enjoyed Tyler Perry’s emotional” quilt story that definitely never happened.

I guess it’s true, you can’t please them all, especially when you are winning them all. But that an odd Canadian comedy that started on a little known network (I still don’t know what is a PopTV) which, according to Papa Levy, is a “celebration of inclusivity, castigation of homophobia and a declaration of the power of love,” was able to put a stop to Modern Family‘s reign of terror is absolutely something to be celebrated.

Oh, Canada. Don’t get too cocky now!
