Sofia Vergara Defends The Times Ellen DeGeneres Made Fun Of Her Accent

The main focus of the recent-ish backlash against Ellen DeGeneres has been all about how she’s nice on camera for the Ellen show, and a demon backstage to employees, helping to foster a toxic work environment of pain and trauma. Amid that conversation have been people on social media, who have pointed out that Ellen isn’t always nice when the cameras are rolling, either. Several Twitter users have tweeted clips of Ellen being mean to her guests, like joking over and over again about Sofia Vergara’s accent during her appearances on the show. Sofia has spoken up about Ellen, and Sofia would like everyone to know that she believes Ellen’s jokes were just that – jokes.

Despite having lots of celebrity friends who jumped to her defense and swore up and down that Ellen was always nice to their rich and famous asses, there’s still plenty of clips online of Ellen being snarky or rude to famous guests of her show. One big one that has been making the rounds is an old clip of Ellen pushing Mariah Carey to prove she’s not pregnant by drinking champagne. Alongside that is this clip compilation featuring Ellen’s former CoverGirl brand co-ambassador Sofia Vergara getting made fun of by Ellen for having an accent.

Ellen’s jokes about Sofia’s accent even made their way into a CoverGirl commercial.

This isn’t a new criticism against Ellen, and people have been calling her out for a while now.

On Friday, Sofia decided to address the situation. Sofia doesn’t want to hear what the haters have to say about that. Because Sofia says she was never a “victim” of Ellen. Looks like someone is getting invited to Ellen’s next public damage control lunch!

E! News points out that in the clip Sofia shared, she and Ellen both engaged in some personal digs, with Ellen making fun of Sofia’s inability to read the words in the commercial script, to Sofia claiming that Ellen gets the most lines because she’s older. Sofia has also proved in the past that she’s not really one for the internet getting uptight over a joke. She appeared on a spinning pedestal as a gag during the 2014 Primetime Emmys and slapped down anyone who called the bit “sexist.”

Ellen hasn’t commented on the Sofia situation, but she did recently speak out, sort of. The Daily Mail says that Ellen was seen this weekend leaving lunch with a friend in Santa Barbara and she was asked about the situation with her producers. Last week, senior producers Kevin Leman, Ed Glavin, and Jonathan Norman, were let go from Ellen. Ellen didn’t have anything to say about that. When asked if she had a message for Ellen fans, she bluntly explained that she would be speaking to her fans about that. Shoot, if you’re trying to convince people you’re not as mean as everyone says you are, maybe don’t use a tone that falls somewhere between Karen Trying To Return A Sweater Without A Receipt and Substitute 7th Grade Teacher On Their Last Nerve.

But back to the jokes. If Sofia says she’s in on the joke and that she doesn’t care, well okay, we have to take her at her word. And I also understand that Ellen’s bad side is not a place you ever want to find yourself. But maybe Sofia might want to go back and watch a few more clips featuring herself and Ellen? Or even just that CoverGirl commercial posted above. There’s no question that Ellen’s Spanish improv work makes Justin Bieber’s attempt at singing “Despacito” seem downright accurate and respectful.
