Open Post: Hosted By Mittens, The Wandering Pussy In The Running For New Zealander Of The Year

Listen, there’s been a lot of official kitty cats profiled round these parts. They include Mayor Sweet Tart of Minnesota, World’s Worst Cat Perdita, and 10 Downing Street’s Chief Mouser Palmerston. But none of these pussies have beat out actual human people to become their country’s top citizen.

Enter Mittens, the ginger gentleman currently in the running for New Zealander of the Year. Mittens is a local celebrity in Wellington, where he casually strolls around the city’s busy streets and proudly trespasses into restaurants, shops, salons, churches, bars, schools, and homes. Like, Mittens will enter through any open window he sees and fall fast asleep on random beds. That cat doesn’t give one single fuck.

But Mittens isn’t a stray. His owner, Silvio Bruinsma, says Mittens has “been a roamer all his life”, and can travel up to 2 kilometers from home each day. To people who worry about Mittens’ safety, Silvio says,“he always makes his way home. He’s just going about his business, enjoying his life.”

Mittens received a key to the city back in May (like that professional trespasser needed a key), and was given the official title of “Mittens, His Floofiness”:

Now that Mittens has tasted glory, his sights are set on becoming New Zealander of the Year. He’s an official nominee, alongside New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, and Director-General of Health, Dr. Ashley Bloomfield. Usually, I’m all for honoring women in power, but this one belongs to Mittens!

New Zealanders have another week to get their votes in. If they’re on the fence, they can follow His Floofiness’ travels on his Facebook group, The Wondrous Adventures of Mittens or on his official Instagram page:

Damn, that pussy gets around.
