The Batman wasn’t the only DC FanDome premiere yesterday that managed to bring the nerdgasms. After Wonder Woman came out in 2017 and became a huge hit, bringing in $821 million worldwide, director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot re-teamed for the sequel Wonder Woman 1984, which is scheduled to come out on October 2, and the latest trailer may make you want to splatter antibacterial shampoo onto your screen because Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah has a serious case of mange.
Patty and Gal were joined by Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, Kirsten, and THEE Lynda Carter on the panel at yesterday’s virtual convention to discuss the movie before Patty dropped another new, more action-packed trailer. If you were wondering, yes we caught the first WW84 trailer back in December, but ever since COVID-19 delayed the release of the film, execs have had nothing to better to do than make longer, more revealing trailers. And this trailer was no exception because this time around, we manage to get a first glimpse of Kristen as Cheetah––Wonder Woman’s arch-nemesis (just when you thought Kristen and Gal couldn’t top their first collaboration, this happens!)
According to Deadline, the gist of the new trailer, with the Cheetah angle, goes as follows:
“It’s clear that Barbara Ann Minerva (Wiig) is an outsider who feels that she is being ignored by society. So it really sounds like a typical ‘the world owes me something so I am going to take it’ narrative when it comes to villains. That said, we see her go from homely to provocative as she dresses in — you guessed it — cheetah print and go head-to-head with Wonder Woman.
The world owes her something? First of all, the world didn’t make Barbara dye her hair that color (I think that shade is probably called “Daytona Beach Blonde” or something). Second, I’m not a comic book expert but… a dowdy, emotionally fraught woman who’s been so kicked down by society that she transforms herself into a feline avenger….didn’t Michelle Pfeiffer do that to purrfection already? But people are already into it:

Towards the end of the clip, we see Barbara morph completely into Cheetah. If you thought that the days of studio heads morphing humans into live-action, scary cat-like figures died with the abomination that was CATS, then you were sadly mistaken. When Wonder Woman first spots the flying wildcat, she stares dejectedly into the sky before mumbling out “What did you do?” (Which was my exact response when I saw that CGI).
