This is one of those Hollywood production rumors that make perfect sense right now, but would be confusing as hell if you heard it fifteen years ago. “Wait, a huge-budget Marvel movie will one day be directed by Alex the Bait Shop bartender from The O.C. who had a crush on Marissa, who is married to an Italian prince in real life?” Yes, that same person. Congratulations on your unlikely career trajectory, Olivia Wilde! Deadline is reporting that Olivia Wilde has closed a deal to direct a secret upcoming Marvel superhero film that will focus on a female superhero from the Marvel universe.
Sources tell Deadline that Olivia has closed a deal on the film, the details of which aren’t exactly known. The only thing known is that the Marvel movie will star a female superhero. Olivia will direct and the script will be written by Katie Silberman, who co-wrote Booksmart (which was directed by Olivia). Amy Pascal will serve as producer, so we can probably automatically scratch Angelina Jolie’s name off the list of potential stars.
Olivia is currently working on a 1950s thriller called Don’t Worry, Darling, starring Shia LaBeouf, Florence Pugh, and Chris Pine. Collider, as well as everyone else, believes that Olivia’s Marvel film will be about Spider-Woman, and they think they know which version of Spider-Woman will be at the center of it. via Collider:
Spider-Woman has been used as the alter ego for several Spider-Man characters since the late ’70s, when Jessica Drew was first introduced as the character. Since then, Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy have taken up the moniker. It’s unclear which character is at the center of Wilde’s project, though I’ve always heard that Sony wanted to do something with Jessica Drew.
Olivia is probably very busy at the moment (researching Spider-Woman, dodging a dozen jokes about bug spray from her partner), but she wasn’t too busy to drop hints about her Marvel movie.

So yeah, Olivia is definitely directing a Spider-Woman movie. Unless there’s another female character in the Marvel universe that identifies as a spider-person? Spider-Granny, perhaps? Spider-Aunt Sue? Maybe that Kristen Wiig GIF is a clue. Okay, it’s definitely Spider-Aunt Sue. I can’t wait for the scene where she catches a villain in a web knit from Caron Simply Soft yarn she got on a 2-for-1 sale at JOANN.
