About a quick second after Joe Biden named Kamala Harris as his running mate yesterday, Maya Rudolph’s name started trending on Twitter, which makes you think that maybe Joe Biden should’ve picked Maya Rudolph AS Kamala Harris for his running mate. But everyone immediately thought of Maya because of her Emmy-nominated Kamala impersonation on Saturday Night Live. Well, Maya should start working on her Cuba Gooding Jr. “SHOW ME THE MONEY!” impersonation, because she’ll need to bring it out when Lorne Michaels calls her to play Kamala all through election season.
Maya got three Emmy nominations this year and two in the same category: Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series. She was nominated for her guest role on The Good Place and for playing Kamala on SNL. Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly held a panel made up of Maya and fellow Emmy nominees like Wanda Sykes, Angela Bassett, Dan Levy, Ramy Youssef, and Giancarlo Esposito. During that panel, Maya learned that Joe picked Kamala as his VP:

Wanda joked that Maya is about to be very busy and Maya pretty much agreed:
“I love going to the show. Any excuse I can get, I love. I just didn’t really anticipate traveling during a pandemic, but if there’s anyone that can work it out I’m sure Lorne [Michaels] has some sort of invisible helicopter that can get me there… Ever since I was a kid, truly, I wanted to be on any kind of SCTV, Saturday Night Live, and I can’t believe that I got to work there, and I can’t believe that it’s my family still. I’m so thrilled to even be associated with the show and that I got to go back. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving. Honestly, it’s my favorite place to play… I’m as surprised as you are, guys. That’s spicy… I don’t know that I’m ready to go right this minute, but it’s so nice to have this nomination be associated with the show because it’s my true love.”
Saturday Night Live will be back in September and is expected to film live from Studio 8H without an audience.
More of Maya Rudolph is only good news. And Lorne may have to pay up to get Maya, so he may have to make some budget cuts elsewhere. Beck Bennett plays Mike Pence on SNL, but maybe they can replace him with an anti-gay and extra stiff dildo in a white wig. The cost will be free and that dildo will probably win an Emmy for its spot-on Mike Pence impersonation.
