Nicole Young filed for divorce from Dr. Dre (real name: Andre Romelle Young) back in June after 24 years of marriage and she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. And like many celebrity divorces, this one is probably going to get messy since they’re fighting over money. They signed a prenuptial agreement, but Nicole has let the court know that Dr. Dre once lovingly tore that shit up to show his love and commitment to her. Dr. Dre may have had two toes crossed when he tore it up and later fished it out of the trash and taped it together because he wants the prenup to be upheld.
The Blast claims in a legal filing, Nicole states that back in 1996 when she and Dre were getting married, he pressured her into signing a prenuptial agreement. While his career was still growing in the 90s, he’s now worth over $800 million dollars thanks in part to a $3 billion Beats by Dre sale to Apple. The ’96 prenup heavily favored Dre (shocking!) and in her legal declaration, Nicole says he gave her an ultimatum over it:
“I must sign a premarital agreement or he would not marry me.”
Nicole claims she was “resistant, and afraid to sign the agreement and felt backed into a corner,” and “left with no option” she chose to “unwillingly” sign the document. Nicole adds that two or three years after their marriage, Dre tore up the prenup in a grand gesture of romance. And not just one prenup he tore up “multiple copies”:
The filing says Dre “destroyed the agreements as a grand gesture of his love for Nicole and his desire to have a marriage free of any financial restrictions governing their respective rights and responsibilities.”
At the time, Nicole claims Dr. Dre “felt ashamed he had pressured me into signing a premarital agreement and he tore up multiple copies of the agreement in front of me.”
She continued, “Since the day he tore up the agreements, we both understood that there was no premarital agreement, and it was null and void.”
Nicole wants spousal support and an even split of their property. Dre agrees to the child support, but his legal team responded to the divorce filing saying the prenup should handle the community property issue. But Nicole emphasized in her documents that if a prenup copy still exists somewhere it is unenforceable because of the romantic gesture.
If Dr. Dre really did tear up the prenup, then that financial move is as genius as him buying his daughters’ way into USC with a $70 million donation. And if he really did tear it up, then Nicole should’ve stopped him before he did, and quickly called in an emergency camera crew, lighting team, lawyers, and several notaries. I mean, such a gesture of true romance deserves to be documented in a video that Nicole can pull out in court while saying, “Roll the footage, bitch,” when Dre tries to challenge her.
