Hsu Sho-Er and Chang Wan Ji, the laundromat owners turned high fashion models!
Every edition of Vogue, and honestly, every fashion magazine out there can go ahead and close up shop for a while because Hsu Sho-Er and Chang Wan Ji are here to entertain the masses with their impeccable posing skills while modeling tomorrow’s trends. Sho-Er and Wan Ji are laundromat owners in Taiwan and have turned their Instagram page into the IT fashion magazine of choice by modeling looks using clothes not picked up by customers. One man’s (forgotten) trash is another man and woman’s couture!
84-year-old Hsu Sho-ER and her husband, 83-year-old Chang Wan Ji, have owned a laundromat in the city of Taichung for decades. If a customer leaves behind clothes in one of their machines and doesn’t pick ’em up after a year, the clothes are fair game. So Sho-Er and Wan Ji’s grandson, Reef Chang, got the idea for them to model ensembles put together with the orphan clothes on Instagram. Their first post when up on June 27. The first post of them putting Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid to shame (although, is that really hard?) went up the next day on June 28. Put up W Magazine’s logo on this picture and everyone would say, “FINALLY, W Magazine is giving us fashion!”
Since first posting last month, they’ve gained more than 190,000 followers. They tell CNN that they thought the page would flop because they didn’t think anybody would want to see them serving looks, so they were pleasantly surprised to find out that they’re a hit.
“It was my grandson’s idea,” explained Wan Ji, who said he has run the business for the best part of 70 years, over email. “I don’t know if my reaction was positive at first,” he added, recalling that his initial response was: “Will anybody want to look at this?”
“I didn’t think people would like it,” said Wan Ji. “Knowing that people still like me makes it feel like I have more grandsons and granddaughters,” Sho-Er added.
Reef Chang added that both of his grandparents are fashionable, and he came up with the idea after seeing them bored at work. He also wanted to show people that oldies have fun with fashion too.
