The Unsolved MysteriesUPDATES” Graphic!

Netflix’s reboot of the 80s and 90s grainy masterpiece (Why was every episode grainier than dick cheese?) Unsolved Mysteries came out a little over a week ago and it’s a hit. Even though it lacks a heavy serving of glamorous intrigue in the form of Robert Stack’s stunning upside down widow peek brows raising as he works a trench coat, I’m into it. Although, while watching, my brain forgets that it’s called UNSOLVED Mysteries and I keep waiting to find out the answer to the mystery. And in the olden days, that’s what the mega dramatic UPDATES graphic was for.

The original Unsolved Mysteries, which first started airing in 1987, was sprinkled with sensationalism and corniness (from those Oscar-worthy re-enactments), but some of the cases they featured did end up getting solved and suspects were busted. Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries is the classier cousin of the Unsolved Mysteries of the past. There’s no host and it’s done docu-series style. There are six episodes on Netflix, and apparently, over a thousand tips have already come in about the cases they’ve featured. And about 50 of the tips are credible. via USA Today:

Executive producer Terry Dunn Meurer, who co-created the series, says more than 260 mysteries from the original were ultimately resolved with the help of tips and other factors, such as increasingly sophisticated DNA testing.

Since the Netflix premiere, “we have received tips,” Meurer told USA TODAY Thursday. When they seem credible, “we pass them on to the appropriate authorities. It’s only been 24 hours. We’re hoping there’s a lot of people who still haven’t watched and maybe this weekend they’ll sit down and binge the episodes and we’ll get more leads.”

TMZ says that the case of Alonzo Brooks, the Black man who was murdered in a highly possible hate crime in rural Kansas, could be the first one that gets solved thanks to tips. And if that happens, that means the UPDATES graphic will make a grand return in season two.

Whenever there was an important development in a past case that aired in the original Unsolved Mysteries, an UPDATES graphic would pop up and some extremely haunting 80s synth music would play Someone made a compilation featuring that iconic graphic along with an extended version of the song, which sounds like the song that plays at the end of an 80s movie where the lead and the lead’s love interest bust out of town on a motorcycle after taking down the bad guys. Fitting!

And well, Lady Justice had a good run but it’s about time for the Unsolved Mysteries’ UPDATES graphic to replace her as the true sign of justice!
