Halle Berry Apologized For Considering Taking The Role Of A Trans Man In A Movie

Halle Berry pulled a quick 180 after first showing a lot of interest in portraying a transgender man in a movie. Few problems here: Halle would have clearly been taking a role away from an actual trans person, and when she talked about the part she misgendered the character a lot. So… Halle heard the people loud and clear and she reversed course, apologizing for even thinking about it. And now the role can go to a more appropriate actor, like noted shape-shifter Scarlett Johansson!

The Daily Beast says that Halle did an Instagram Live interview with hairstylist, Christin Brown. And during the long chat, Halle talked about her new movie Bruised, which she also directed, and brought up how she was considering the role of a trans man in another movie. While talking about the character, Halle proved that she’s truly educated on trans matters by misgendering the character several times:

“She’s a woman that transitioned into a man. She’s a character in a project I love and I might be doing… I want to experience that world, understand that world. I want to deep dive in that like I did Bruised… And this world and who this woman was, is so interesting to me, and that will probably be my next [acting project]… That’s what I want to experience and that’s what I want to understand and that’s what I want to study and that’s what I want to explore. It’s really important to me to tell stories, and that’s a woman–that’s a female story. It changes to a man, but I want to understand the why and how of that. You know? I want to get into it.”

Here’s the whole convo, Halle talks about the trans character about 37 minutes in:

Yikes. Now picture Scarlett Johansson saying all these same things but about a redwood tree. Halle obviously got shat on from the trans community and anyone who understands misgendering and job opportunities, and so she reversed course fast. She tweeted a thank you to people for the “guidance and critical conversation” (nice way of saying “criticism”) and said she now realizes that she should’ve never considered taking the role of a trans person.

Thank god Scarlett Johansson didn’t lose another role to a cisgender woman. What a crime that would have been. The Mystique of Hollywood can now feel free to shape-shift into another role made for her. Or maybe the producers of this movie, who knowingly pitched a trans role to a cis woman, will meet everyone halfway and use a trans actor but with a cis person doing the voice.
