Ben Mulroney Has Announced He’s Leaving His Position At eTalk To Make Way For More Diversity

Hollywood claims it’s open for business again and that people can begin socially distanced filming (the success of which remains to be seen). But for me, the real sign that celebrities are officially back to work will be when they begin to fulfill their contractual obligation to the almighty press circuit. But when they do, Ben Mulroney won’t be reporting on it every night. Because Jessica Mulroney’s husband has decided to step back from his hosting duties at eTalk.

Entertainment Tonight reports that Ben made the big announcement today on Your Morning, the morning show that Ben has co-hosted for the past four years. Ben revealed that he’s stepping away from his co-anchor position on eTalk, after eighteen years on the job. He’s not quitting, of course. He’s just demoted himself to a less-visible position. Which is tough, since I believe you can see his hair swoop from space.

Ben also acknowledges his privilege. Ben is a rich white TV guy, but he’s also the son of Brian Mulroney, who was the Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993. And Jessica comes from old shoe money. I believe that’s the Canadian form of being untouchable.

But with Ben stepping away, that leaves a spot open for someone with the facial muscle strength to maintain a smile for an extended amount of time. Ben wants to see it go to a person who is Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color. This may be too deep of a cut for American readers, but the job should clearly go to Maestro (formerly of the Fresh-Wes’es). I’ve seen how he handles a microphone and an audience on Metropia, the man is skilled.

ET says Ben will continue to co-host Your Morning. He’s also going to continue to do red carpets for eTalk.

I, and many others, saw this one coming. Because it’s kind of hard to talk entertainment news when the biggest, most entertaining news story of the past twelve days has been your own wife’s inability to spell while she’s threatening the career of a Black woman. Jessica effectively killed any future photo-ops with her best (but not really) friend Meghan Markle, after it was revealed by Canadian lifestyle influencer Sasha Exeter that Jessica threatened to end Sasha’s career and sue her for libel. Jessica lost all of her TV jobs, but she remains a stylist to the stars. Because Jessica is sort of the reason Ben is doing damage control today. Or maybe Ben has finally realized that his total domination of Canadian television is an abuse of his nepotism. He did say he and Jessica have been both working on educating themselves on anti-Black racism and privilege. Although why do I get the feeling that Jessica’s homework is just a crumpled piece of paper with the words, “Step One: Don’t Use Privyledge 2 Seek Revenge.”
