George Floyd’s Daughter Is Now A Disney Shareholder, Thanks To Barbra Streisand
In the wake of the murder of 46-year-old George Floyd, we’ve learned that George left behind five children, a fact that makes a truly awful situation another level of awful. But along with demanding justice for George’s family, some high-profile people have been doing what they can to ensure that George’s youngest child, his 6-year-old daughter Gianna, doesn’t have to worry about finances as she grows up. Kanye West set up a college fund for Gianna. And now we’re learning that Barbra Streisand has made sure Gianna will always have some cash stored in her mouse ears, by purchasing Disney stock in Gianna’s name.
CNN reports that Barbra’s good deed was revealed by Gianna on her Instagram page. According to a post from Saturday, Gianna got a fancy Disney-branded package informing her that She-Who-Shall-Never-Be-Seen-From-The-Right bought her some shares.
Gianna didn’t say how many Disney shares are in her name. I certainly hope it’s enough so that Gianna can one day pound her fist on a Disney boardroom table and proudly remind everyone what percentage of the company she owns. And maybe if Barbra opens her pockets enough and keeps doing good deeds, she can eventually reverse the definition of The Streisand Effect. Everyone wins, really. Tell James Brolin to pull out the checkbook, and keep buying shares for people, Barbra!
Barbra’s generosity didn’t end with a share purchase. She also sent Gianna two DVDs of her album-turned-TV specials, Color Me Barbra and My Name Is Barbra. How very Barbra Streisand of Barbra Streisand to send a little girl her own DVDs, but it’s the thought that counts. A spokesperson for Barbra confirmed that she had sent the gift, and explained why she chose those specific DVDs:
“We confirm the information in the recent Instagram by George Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, concerning a gift to her from Barbra Streisand.”
Streisand’s spokeswoman quoted the star as saying: “I sent Gianna videos where I played a little girl in my first television special singing kid songs and my second special a sequence with lots of baby animals.”
I hope that Barbra makes a little tradition of sending Gianna DVDs and albums. Because she’s obviously too little now, but about a decade and a half from now, I think she’d really enjoy singing “Guilty” into a hairbrush (who wouldn’t, really).
