Tavi Gevinson Called Out Karlie Kloss For Not Speaking Up About Her In-Laws

If this is your first real introduction to Tavi Gevinson, then here’s what you need to know. She’s a 24-year-old blogger-turned-magazine editor-turned-actress-turned aggrivating pebble in Karlie Kloss’ size 9 Dior heels. Tavi’s personal brand includes calling out bullshit where she sees it on social media, and she recently caught a whiff of something stinky and fetid coming from Karlie’s attempt at a Black Lives Matter post. According to Tavi, Karlie has a lot of “nerve” preaching a message of anti-racism when she has yet to denounce the politics of her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

This all started on May 28th, three days after George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police and people began protesting in the wake of his death. Some celebrities chose to do their part by getting out on the streets and marching with protesters, while others did their part on social media. Karlie decided to repost an illustration about tackling racism. Karlie encouraged her 8.7 million Instagram followers to end racism by “healing it” in your own family, and that the first conversation should be at “your own kitchen table.”

This is where I remind you that Karlie shares a kitchen table with her husband of almost two years (and partner since 2012), Josh Kushner. Josh Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, who is Ivanka Trump’s husband and Donald Trump’s son-in-law. Karlie and Josh have tried very hard to position themselves as the polite, non-confrontational anti-Trump Kushners, by donating to left-leaning causes and speaking about feminism. But Karlie has also never straight-up called out her in-laws. The most she’s ever done was smile uncomfortably at a joke about her in-laws on an episode of Project Runway. Tavi had it, and she unleashed on Ivanka’s sister-in-law in the comments of that post:

Karlie didn’t respond to Tavi. Probably because she was too busy setting up her own camera to record herself making calls to her mayor’s office.

Tavi followed up her original comment with this one, tagging Karlie’s high-profile fashion industry friends Derek Blasberg, Dasha Zhukova, and Lauren Santo Domingo.

cc: @derekblasberg @dasha @thelsd. If any of you want to talk about this offline let me know.”

And later in that same comment thread, Tavi tagged Josh Kushner and told him to, “Grow a spine.” Derek obviously had time (his calls must have all been made), because he made sure to respond to everyone who dared to call Karlie out for her silence, including Tavi. Derek called Tavi a troll, and told her to be more “constructive” with her activism.

Derek also says he thinks he would know if he had any neo-fascist friends. But it’s important to point out that not only is Derek friends with Karlie, but he’s also friends with Ivanka and Jared, as pointed out by The AIDS Memorial.

He was also at Trump’s inaugural gala in 2017.

Someone should point Derek in the direction of Tavi’s Instagram account, where he’ll see that she’s been very active in sharing links to donation sites and lists of actions people can take. But if Derek does visit Tavi’s Instagram page, he should probably make that a solo journey. Leave Karlie behind. It will be too confusing for her when she gets to Tavi’s impression of Ivanka. Karlie would want to call Tavi out for not spreading positive vibes and kitchen table hugs and all that. But saying Ivanka’s name out loud? I don’t know, that’s not really on brand.
