Dr. Moose!

Move over Dog With A Blog (no, that’s not the name of my memoir, that’s offensive to dogs), here comes Dog With An Honorary Degree! The extremely dashing as fuck intellectual above used to go by the name Moose, but now he’s Dr. Moose to all of us. NDTV says that Dr. Moose has worked as a therapy dog at Virginia Tech since 2014, and at this year’s virtual graduation ceremony, he was given an honorary degree in veterinary medicine, making him a doctor. Cut to all the gold kibble digging hos at the dog park presenting their holes to a real doctor!

8-year-old Dr. Moose the Labrador works at the Cook Counseling Center and helps students and staff of Virginia Tech. He’s done over 7,500 counseling sessions. Trent Davis, a licensed counselor at VT’s Animal-Assistant Therapy program, is also Dr. Moose’s human and he said this about the good work the pooch has done:

“The students here talk a lot about how Moose has broken down the stigma around mental health care on campus. Veterinarians are unfortunately a very challenged population. They have high rates of suicide, and this profession can be quite disturbing. He has really helped the students and staff at Virginia Tech and has gotten a lot of recognition for that.”

And Dr. Moose helps others even while going through his own health woes. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and has to go through radiation treatment and chemotherapy.

Congratulations Dr. Moose and here’s to him taking down that demonic piece of shit cancer. I hope Dr. Moose does Zoom sessions because I could use all the mental help I can get. And if my dog could read, he’d pfft at this story since he’s got several degrees in napping from LBU (Lazy Bitch University).

Moose is so happy to serve the Hokie Nation, sharing smiles, tail wags, and his calming presence. On Friday, he humbly accepted an honorary doctorate from @vamdvetmed. We often say that we will never know Moose’s full impact. He is beloved by so many. The story of his DOG-torate has been making a splash nationally and internationally, and we are thrilled to know that Moose’s story is bringing hope and smiles to people all over the world. Moose leads his junior colleagues, Wagner, Derek, and Carson as the therapy dog team continues to serve at VT. #utprosim . Congratulations, Dr. Moose!
