Tyra Banks Is Getting Called Out For The Messy Shit She Said And Did On “America’s Next Top Model”

Welcome to Cancel Culture: Retroactive Edition.
America’s Next Top Model first debuted in 2003 and there have been 24 seasons of it since then. Tyra Banks hosted and was the head judge for all but one season. And since the internet has the time during this lockdown, some have been watching old seasons of ANTM and are just realizing that it was a mess. So Tyra trended on Twitter from people getting outraged over the vintage messiness. And they weren’t just mad about that time she gave a guy a “beard weave“. They brought up colorism, blackface, and just a plethora of disrespect. I mean, yeah, that was the whole show. Tyra was the type to shave a trick bald and then send her ass home the next day. No fucks given.
ONTD collected a bunch of ANTM clips making the rounds on Twitter. Here’s Tyra insulting contestant Danielle Evans for refusing to close a gap in her teeth (Danielle eventually won the season). And in a later season, she ordered the gap special for one contestant.

Tyra also shamed a model for not going nude. And here’s some “ethnicity swapping” and blackface eleganza:
They even did it TWICE.
One of the times was for an "ethnicity swap" or something like that, and they were told they had to embrace the persona of the other ethnicity and oh my god I nearly vomited just typing that outHere's the cliphttps://t.co/Bqd9Vyk3N9

Twitter also brought up how Tyra would criticize Yaya DaCosta for being too “afro-centric” and the judging panel rolled their eyes at Yaya trying to “prove” her “African-ness“:
I mean, if we're going to crucify Tyra for all the manically fucked up shit she has done to girls on America's Next Top Model, this one moment with Yaya takes the cake. She is pressed when a black girl is more intelligent than her.https://t.co/j9MY7UqGN9

Refinery29 points out that Yaya actually talked about all this semi-recently by posting messages to Instagram about how a cast member of Love & Hip Hop Miami, Amara La Negra, was facing colorist issues on her series. Yaya talked about how she faced those same issues when she was on ANTM (via Essence):
“…It reminded them of me as a young girl, learning to navigate the new phenomenon of reality TV… Unfortunately, 14 years later, nothing has changed. Same ignorance, new show… It took a lot of work to heal from that experience and looking back, I feel so much for that eager, vulnerable young version of myself. There are so many things I would whisper in her ear… @amaralanegraaln I truly applaud your strength. As another brown-skinned, curly-headed woman with African roots and Latin branches, I stand with you.”
The runner-up of cycle 24 of ANTM, Jeana Turner, also spoke out about Tyra’s more recent behavior (cycle 24 was in 2018) and said she was awful and tried shaming her for previously working with Playboy. Jeana breached her contract with ANTM’s production company to call the experience “exploitative” in tell-all YouTube posts.
“She’s Tyra Banks. She knows what she’s doing.”
Some people defended TyTy, claiming she just represented what the fashion world was like at that time.
Okay, so I know Tyra was demonic, tortured models, and perpetuated the absolute worst parts of the modeling industry for the purpose of creating hyper-dramatic television moments. But she’s changed! She’s all about Modelland and inclusiveness now! Tyra has become Tookie De La Crème!
And to be honest, if we’re dragging her for all her past bullshit, can we also point out that she’s the Queen of Failed MLM Schemes?!
