Open Post: Hosted By Missy Elliott’s Video For “Cool Off”

You ever have one of those situations where you really just need something desperately but you didn’t know that you needed it until it’s staring you in the face? If not, hopefully you’re about to. Missy Elliott just released the final video for the single Cool Off from her 2019 EP Iconography and it’s the only thing I want to look at for the next week. Maybe month. Possibly the year, I dunno, we’ll see how long it takes for this busted ass timeline to fold in on itself and we’re all crushed underfoot by coughing dinosaurs. Until then, don’t bother me, I’m cooling off!

According to Rolling Stone, the video for Cool Off is the “to be continued” part of her previous videos for DripDemeanor, Throw It Back and the time-hopping Why I Still Love You. Here, as in the previous videos, Teyana Taylor plays a futuristic museum guide leading a miseducated young girl who doesn’t know who Missy is, through a gallery dedicated to “the greatest, most timeless woman of all time.” But before that, Missy “appears as a bronze statue that begins to sing, surrounded by other living statues that groove alongside her.” Soon thereafter, an explosion of color rivaling any gender reveal stunt had me screaming ”Congratulations, it’s an ICON!” Here’s the video, directed by Daniel Russell.

Watching real dancers hitting hard makes me realize what we’ve been missing from watching all these lazy amateur TikTok videos! I hope Drake is ashamed of himself. And I fully expect that little girl to join Missy on stage (like previous kid dancer phenom Alyson Stoner did last year) at the 2039 VMAs when Missy is picking up her 20th Video Vanguard award. I can’t find that young dancer’s name anywhere, but perhaps we can get a peek at the future museum dedicated to her if the timeline folds up at just the right angle.
