As you can see by those extra-large, open-mouthed WE WILL BE FRIENDS FOREVER!!! smiles, there was a time that Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez were once the most B of FFs. But it turns out those smiles were destined to be frozen in time, much like the 2011 Teen Choice Awards themselves. Demi recently spoke about the current status of her friendship with Selena, and she’s here to make it very clear that those days are behind her.
Demi and Selena’s friendship started a long, long time ago in 2002, during the 7th season of Barney & Friends. They continued to be friends, thanks to both of them scoring lucrative Disney contracts. Demi and Selena were so close, at one point in time they were two-halves of a dramatic Kidz Bop feud with Miley Cyrus. Demi recently got into their friendship during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. Harper’s asked Demi if she’s still in contact with some of her former Disney cohorts, like Miley and the Jonas Brothers. Demi says she doesn’t talk to the Jonas brothers anymore, which must have been a recent-ish falling out, considering she was posing on magazine covers with Nick Jonas less than four years ago. According to Demi, Miley is the only one from “that era” that Demi still keeps in contact with. Last month they did a self-isolation Instagram live chat together.
As for Selena, she left Demi a heartfelt Instagram post after Demi performed at the 2020 Grammys back in January. Demi’s appearance at the Grammys was the first time she had performed since her accidental drug overdose in July 2018. She performed the song, “Anyone,” a song she reportedly wrote four days before she was found unconscious in her home. Selena posted a picture of Demi’s performance to her Instagram Stories with the caption:
“I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational, and DESERVED this moment was. Demi I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and your bravery.”
That’s nice, except Demi wasn’t so touched. Demi had this to say about Selena’s Instagram message:
“When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt…” Lovato stops herself. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”
“It felt…” followed by a quick redirect and a general wishing of nothing but the best? It’s like a shady Choose Your Own Adventure where all the choices lead to a final chapter titled: I Do Not Know That Bitch. And she’s giving us all the clues to jump to our own conclusion, and so I will!
Demi Lovato’s current manager is Scooter Braun. Demi came to Scooter’s defense after Todrick Hall, problematic minion of Taylor Swift, accused Scooter of being homophobic. Selena Gomez made it very clear whose side she was on during the Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun feud (she’s a hardcore Friend of Taylor). Demi Lovato is good friends with Justin Bieber, who happens to be both the evil ex-boyfriend of Selena Gomez and Scooter Braun’s favorite lil’ money maker. So essentially, Demi was really holding back with that dot-dot-dot. That’s probably why she ended it by wishing everybody nothing but the best. Demi has already been called out by Taylor Swift once before, she doesn’t need Round Two. Especially not while Taylor is stuck inside with nothing but free time and an empty schedule.
