The Wildlife Treasury!

Sure, looking up animals on Google takes a millisecond and instantly fills your brain with all sorts of facts and pictures, but it has NOTHING on the magic that would instantly fill the air when you opened up the plastic green treasure chest known as The Wildlife Treasury. The Wildlife Treasury is and always will be the authority on the animal kingdom. Well, the authority on the animal kingdom after Brian Fellow, of course.

Wildlife Treasure was a magical trove of animal facts that brought hours upon hours of entertainment. Wikipedia says that Leisure Books started making it in 1975 and stopped in 1981. Well, I do know that it was still for sale in the late-80s, because that’s when my mom bought me one…. unless she blatantly lied to me and told me it was brand new when she really bought a used one from a garage sale (smart move, mom). But seriously, it was a monthly subscription, and each month you got a new set of cards. The first month came with that magnificent green carrying case. Here’s the green box of magic along with all of the jewels that go inside it:

Each card featured an animal and on it was the picture of the animal as well as several highly important facts. Here’s a 1987 commercial of Ginger Jack Hannah Jr. showing us the educational glory of the Wildlife Treasury!

I don’t know where mine is today, but I should slap myself down for losing track of it and not making it my most-prized possession. But still, if I ever want to get a job at an animal park or zoo, I’d just have to stroll in and say, “When I was a kid, I had a Wildlife Treasury, and read like 15% of the cards. Okay, 10%,” and they’d immediately say, “Right this way to your new office, Mr. President of This Zoo.
