Penelope Cruz and Winona Ryder Come To Johnny Depp’s Defense

Johnny Depp has a lot to be thankful for––and it’s not just his ability to translate that broody, mumble-speak thing he does and his eternally unkempt appearance into one successful movie role after another. It’s because he’s got the support of Penelope Cruz and his ex, Winona Ryder, in his never-ending ongoing defamation case against ex-wife, Amber Heard.

Amber, you’ll remember (even if you didn’t want to), claims that Johnny was an abuser during their marriage. Meanwhile, recent audio leaks would appear to implicate Amber herself as being abusive too. By all accounts, the case is an absolute mess. But, fear not. We’ve got the mom from Stranger Things to clear things up.

According to People, Winona and Penelope have both submitted official declarations on behalf of Johnny. Winona’s statement talks about how great a guy he is, how he wouldn’t hurt a fly, etc.

“I am aware of the violence allegations that have been made publicly for the last few years by Johnny Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard,” Ryder, who had a four-year relationship with Depp, wrote in the documents.

“I do not want to call anyone a liar but from my experience of Johnny, it is impossible to believe that such horrific allegations are true. I find it extremely upsetting knowing him as I do.”

Penelope released her own words about Johnny, who she first met when she was 19, and subsequently worked with multiple times.

“Many years have passed and I have not only made 3 movies with him, but I also count on him as a great friend. I’ve always been impressed by his kindness, his brilliant mind, his talent, and his peculiar sense of humor,”

Hard to believe that Winona and Penelope can’t wrap their heads around the idea that just because a guy was nice to you a bunch of times doesn’t mean it’s impossible for him to be an asshole to anyone else.

I feel it worth mentioning that when it comes to defending the creepy behavior of her famous friends, Penelope was one of dozens of celebrities who signed a petition to have Roman Polanski––convicted child rapist and all around “misunderstood” pepaw––released from a Swiss prison in 2009. She also worked with Woody Allen on Vicky Christina Barcelona, for which she won an Oscar, and questioned whether the sexual abuse claims made against him could possibly be true. Her husband, Javier Bardem, by the way, openly admits to having NO REGRETS about working with Woody.

Amber’s camp has yet to respond.

Hopefully, Winona will be called to court to deliver her words in person. And, hopefully, she’ll bring David Harbour with her so we can get an updated range of her award-winning faces:
