The 92nd Annual Academy Awards are happening today, and if you need me, I’ll be screaming, “It should’ve been ROSA!”, when Renee Zellweger wins Best Actress and, “It should’ve been MARLENE!”, when Laura Dern wins Best Supporting Actress. Technically, Rosa and Marlene laid down their thespian skills this year, and not in 2019, but a stupid detail called “time” doesn’t matter when it comes to talent like this, and these are the performances that the Academy should be recognizing tonight!
Rosa and Marlene are a big reason for why I joined TikTok, and ignored the error message that hit me at sign-up: Old bitch, take your decaying ass back to Facebook! Rosa is the creation of 20-year-old Adam Martinez, who works at a call center in San Antonio, TX. The character of Rosa is a chola type high school student with gloriously busted broom brows and highlighter that makes her look like Casper scooted across her cheeks. It all started with this:

Adam tells Insider this about why he created Rosa:
The inspiration for Rosa, Martinez says, is that under-appreciated funny person everyone has in their lives. “Rosa is just somebody that everybody happens to know, whether it’s through school, through a friend, they just all have met somebody like her,” he told Insider. “So I thought, ‘why don’t I just bring her back and let her shine?'”
The first few Rosa videos went viral, and that created spin-off videos of people responding to and playing off Rosa. But none come close to matching the chemistry and magic of Rosa and Marlene. Marlene began doing Rosa response videos last month, and she is the dark brown lip liner to Rosa’s beige lipstick.
There was Mary and Rhoda, Thelma and Louise, Romy and Michele, and now there’s Rosa and Marlene!

I knew several Rosas and Marlenes in junior high and high school, and I was the loser gay who they would sometimes defend from bullies, and who I would thank by pulling them out of class, since I was a “student counselor” (how I got that gig is a mind boggle to this day), and watch as they did their makeup when I was supposed to be “counseling” them.
Adam says that Rosa and Marlene will hang out in real-life one day:
Martinez never planned on the collaboration — he first saw a Marlene / Rosa mashup on Twitter — but the two have become friends. “Everybody just loved our connection. They just felt like we already knew each other,” he said. “I reached out to her, we’re friends now, we text here and there. We’re planning on meeting up.”
Adam is going to continue to expand the character of Rosa, and hopefully that will bring on more master classes in acting from Rosa and Marlene. Because no acting class at Juilliard will ever teach you how to perfectly deliver a line while eating Hot Cheetos with queso.
