Janeane Garofalo Blames Edward Norton For Her Losing Out On Helena Bonham Carter’s Role In “Fight Club”

Last night, at a semi-drunken gathering to watch Taylor Swift’s Netflix doc (some of us gays really have to start having kids), someone suddenly looked up from their phone to announce that Janeane Garofalo was blaming Edward Norton for her losing out on the “Marla” role in Fight Club. This seemed like such an odd complaint, so obtuse, so vague, that everyone stayed silent and then quickly went back to critiquing Taylor’s choice to go with a bob for that one iteration. But it’s true, ET reports that Janeane says she was going to be Marla until Edward Norton cock-blocked her.

In an interview with Yahoo’s “Build Series,” 90s icon of sardonic Janeane told the story of how director David Fincher told her she was going to be in Fight Club until Courtney Love’s ex-boyfriend ruined her dreams. Seriously, this story is just SLATHERED in the 1990s.

“I met with [the film’s director] David Fincher, who handed me the script and said, ‘If you like it, the part is yours,’” the “Reality Bites” actress reveals.

Oh, and seriously get our your Manic Panic hair dye and your ringer t-shirt cuz’ it turns out Ed Norton wanted Courtney for the role but Brad Pitt said FUCK NO. SO 90s.

“I was told that he would like Courtney Love to do it, because he was dating her, but Brad Pitt said, ‘I’m not going to sign off on that.’ So, they agreed on Helena Bonham Carter, who was probably much better than I would have been,” she explains.

Janeane also revealed that Brad approached her later on and apologized for what went down. Guess who didn’t apologize? That pissy Eddie Norton!

“He very kindly said, ‘I’m sorry about what happened with that,’ and he had nothing to do with it,” she reveals. However, Garofalo says that even though she and Norton live close to one another, he has never addressed it with her.

If you’re a Fight Club fan, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing Marla (she’s the best part of the movie) so this was probably a good thing. And don’t worry – Norton got his. He was such an arrogant prick that Marvel fired his ass as the Hulk and adorable Mark Ruffalo took over and he’s generally universally beloved in that role so Ed Norton was out some MCU cash. So Janeane’s vengeance was cold but it came round’ eventually!
