The Original Giggles!
The 62nd Grammys are tonight, and for the MILLIONTH TIME (Yes, I know there’s only been 62 Grammy awards, but the snubbing of The Original Giggles defies basic math!) OGG (original gangsta Giggles) has been snubbed! Giggles is a Puerto Rican chanteuse and a high-ranking member of the freestyle royal court whose songs have definitely caused my cousins to kick a trick off the box at an all-ages club so they could let it loose to THEIR song!
I keep calling her The Original Giggles, because there’s been several. “Giggles” has been replaced more than Jill Abbott from The Young and the Restless. Producer Charlie “Rock” Jimenez supposedly owns the rights to the Giggles name, and from the mid-80s until now, has replaced her repeatedly. So there’s a gaggle of Giggles, if you will! But the original is the Bronx’s own Maria Respeto (Yaya DaCosta’s favorite freestyle artiste, I’m sure), who in 1986, crooned out a freestyle classic and one of Giggles’ biggest hits: Love Letter, which she also wrote. Two of the sole reasons for why me, someone is WAY TOO DAMN OLD years old, is on TikTok are Rosa and Marlene, and Rosa and Marlene would definitely give Love Letter a prime spot on the mix-tape they give to friends if the year was currently 1986.
I’m not sure when exactly Maria Respeto stopped being Giggles, but she was definitely not Giggles when another hit What Goes Around, Comes Around was born. I was a little older when this masterpiece came out, so I could fully appreciate the revenge glamour of it all. And get into Giggles #WhoKnows throwing down some serious lip-synching skills in a public access performance for the history books!
“Giggles” still performs today, and so does Maria Respeto. I’m not sure what the other Giggles are up to (but I will investigate this in my upcoming Patreon podcast Gaggle of Giggles), but the Grammys still need to do the right thing by giving Maria Respeto the RESPETO she deserves. Or maybe the Grammys hasn’t honored Giggles because they want to honor all of them and they don’t have enough room on the stage. Well, get a bigger stage, bitch! The Gaggles of Giggles deserve it!
