Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Will Reportedly Pay For Their Own Security When They Start Making Enough Money

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently living the good life in Canada, but since they’re the type of famous in which they can’t even take their dogs out for a poo in the woods without being photograph, they need a security team. And so far, no one has really figured out who was going to pay for it.

Buckingham Palace hasn’t said whether they’ll foot the bill, or if they’ll invoice Canadian taxpayers for that. Harry and Meghan have explained that they plan on being totally financially independent with the help of some multi-million dollar deals (despite the fact that they’ll still get an allowance from Prince Charles). The Telegraph now claims that Harry and Meghan are trying to work out a deal where they’ll only pay for some of their security bill, and only if they end up making loads of money.

A source says that Harry and Meghan were inspired by a security deal former Prime Minister Tony Blair made after he left office in 2007. Being a former world leader means that Tony needs security, but not as much as when he was in office. Tony also makes several million dollars a year, so he reimburses part of his security costs for commercial trips and private business. In 2015, The Guardian estimated that regular citizen Tony Blair was costing British taxpayers several million dollars a year in police escorts and the like. Estimates put each event he attended at a cost of about $18,000 to $21,000 on security. The Guardian reports that members of British government have called for Tony to contribute more money for his security costs, especially when some of his security use is for personal business deals that have nothing to do with the public.

The Telegraph says that Harry and Meghan want their arrangement to be the same. Some of it will be paid for by taxpayers, and some of it will be paid out of their own pockets, if security is used for a private business engagement that has no connection to the Royal Family.

Their ability to pay towards their security will depend on their commercial success. The couple intend to embark on television production deals – the Duchess was previously an actress on the US television legal drama Suits. Netflix, the streaming service, has expressed an interest in signing up the Duke and Duchess.

And as of right now, it hasn’t been figured out how much security will be needed:

The level of security needed for Prince Harry and his wife and their child will be decided by the Royal VIP Executive Committee and is based on an assessment of the level of threat, risks and vulnerability to assassination attempts.

Security sources believe Harry and Meghan’s 24-7 security coverage, which they still use at their rental home in Canada, is at least $2 million a year. They’re reportedly using a minimum of six Royal protection officers from the British police force, but they will make the transition to using a team of Canadian mounties. Sources suspect that most of the cost will be split between British and Canadian taxpayers. But if Harry and Meghan start making lots of money, they will pay for some of it too. Better start making that money, because Canadians are nice, but there’s a limit to our kindness when someone is trying to fuck with our weekly Tim’s budget.

Speaking of people who are hurting for money at the moment, Thomas Markle is back! And he’s more shameless than ever. The Daily Beast says that Meghan’s dad participated in a documentary for the UK’s Channel 5 called Thomas Markle: My Story. The documentary was filmed back in October, long before Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping back from senior royal duties. And the gist is that Thomas wants money from Meghan and the Royal Family.

“At this point, they owe me. The royals owe me. Harry owes me, Meghan owes me. What I’ve been through I should be rewarded for. My daughter told me that when I reach my senior years she’ll take care of me. I’m in my senior years now, it’s time to look after Daddy.”

Thomas also says he regrets staging those pre-wedding paparazzi shots, even if he is still making money off of them. Uh oh, Thomas – you blew it, buddy! You just admitted you’re making money. Even Harry and Meghan aren’t making their own money yet. Use some common sense Thomas. How are they supposed to pay your bills when they can’t even pay their own yet?
