We’re about two weeks away from the Super Bowl, aka Jock Christmas as presented by Beer and Totino’s Pizza Rolls. But whoever is in charge of Super Bowl LIV must have thought there was just too much bro energy about the big game, and they decided to balance it out with lots of ladies. We’ve known since September that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will co-headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and now we know that Demi Lovato will belt out the National Anthem.
Demi broke the news on Instagram today, writing “See you in Miami.” Super Bowl LV will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Her announcement is very Miami. The palm leaves, the blue ombre lettering, the neon pink windbreaker jacket that looks like it was swiped from the lost and found of the Coral Siesta Retirement Pavilion.
Demi hasn’t performed live since before her drug overdose in July 2018. This is a pretty big gig to return with. But this isn’t her only big performance coming up. Two days ago, she announced that she’d be performing at the 2020 Grammys on January 26th.
This might be the lead-up to an announcement about new music. Her last album, Tell Me You Love Me, was released back in 2017, while her last single, “Sober,” came out in June 2018.
Regardless of whether there will be new music or not, Demi is a pretty good choice. The Super Bowl is in Miami, a city that’s made up of about 70% hispanic people. Demi is from New Mexico, which is pretty damn far away from Miami. But her father is of Mexican descent, and her mother was a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. She’s also able to sing. But I’m not entirely sure what the NFL looks for in a national anthem candidate. I just know that despite the NFL’s official policy on standing for the National Anthem, they’ll probably encourage Demi to sit down while she’s performing. It’s not going to look good if Demi accidentally fell off stage while trying to hit the high notes on “the land of the freeeeeee.”
