Some Broadway news for the real queens out there: Tony Award-winner, Idina Menzel is going to put all that money she’s made from Frozen 2 into savings and head back to Broadway this fall. Maybe. I mean come on: you don’t do Broadway for the money when you’re earning Frozen 2-money–you do it for the art! Not that one is art and one isn’t but… one is Frozen 2…
Broadway Journal says that Idina is looking like the next choice to take on the role made famous by Barbra Streisand herself: Funny Girl. Quick! Someone check on Lea Michele!
Funny Girl is about Fanny Brice, a girl working on Broadway who eventually becomes a star, and her tumultuous relationship with Nicky Arnstein. Honestly, it’s sort of like A Star Is Born without anyone dying. It has big songs recognizable to the gayest member of your group (me) such as: “Don’t Rain on my Parade”, “People” and “My Man”. Poor Lea Michele even sang “My Man” as a tribute to Barbra. (Barbra’s is better.) But it looks like it’s not gonna happen this time and she’ll have to Single White Female Barbra Streisand another day.
The 1964 original Broadway production of Funny Girl starred Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice, and she won an Oscar for her role in the movie version in 1969. It has never been revived on Broadway. There was a revival in the works in 2011 that was supposed to star Lauren Ambrose, but that production was scrapped after investors pulled out. And on Glee, Lea Michele’s character stars in a Broadway revival of Funny Girl. Ryan Murphy got the stage rights to Funny Girl, and so many thought he’d bring a Glee storyline to real life by casting Lea in the title role on Broadway, but he later said he didn’t know if she wanted to make that commitment. In 2018, Rosie O’Donnell claimed Lady Gaga was going to star in a Broadway revival with Rosie playing Fanny’s mom, but she later took it back, saying she was just dream casting out loud.
If the revival happens, Michael Mayer, who staged a revival of the show back in 2015 in London, will direct.
Meanwhile, Idina has been after this role too. She has called the role of Fanny Brice the “only one role” she’d want to revive. Welp, looks like it could happen. Sorry Lea, this is karma for stealing a gig from Lindsay Lohan.
Can’t wait for opening night when Lea disguises herself and vandalizes the marquee to read: “Funny Girl Starring Adele Dazeem.”
