It’s official – Ricky Gervais really won’t be back next year to host the Golden Globes. But that doesn’t mean celebrity egos will get any less of a break. Variety says that creep-dragging icons Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have been announced as the hosts of the 2021 Golden Globe awards. Those poor Oscars. They can’t even get one host, and here’s the Golden Globes bragging that they already have two lined up for a ceremony that’s a whole year away.
The announcement was made by Paul Telegdy, chairman of NBC Entertainment, at NBCUniversal’s Television Critics Association press tour. He said:
“NBC has long been the home to two of the funniest people on the planet – Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – and we didn’t want to wait any longer to share the great news that they’ll be hosting the Globes once again.”
Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, also commented on the choice, saying that there’s no denying Tina and Amy have “infectious” chemistry, and that the HFPA “couldn’t wait” to see them return to host the show.
NBC was home to both 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation, so it’s no surprise that NBC already has a good working relationship with Tina and Amy. Tina is also working on a new series for NBC, and Amy currently hosts NBC’s reality craft competition series Making It. They’ve hosted together three times before, in 2013, 2014, and 2015. The first time they hosted together, they followed a three-year streak by Ricky Gervais, who was also the host that followed them in 2016.
But that doesn’t mean the material will be the same. Tina and Amy have a very different style from Ricky, despite sharing a love of roasting up the famous people sitting in front of them. The only thing that will carry over is a joke about Leonardo DiCaprio dating someone decades younger than himself. Although to be fair, that joke will be in rotation for at least two more decades.
