Page Six Gave People Magazine Some Side-Eye For Their Coverage Of Michelle Williams’ Engagement and Pregnancy

Next to White Diamonds, Whiff of Scandal is my absolute favorite scent. And it’s a scent Page Six is accusing People Magazine of purposefully omitting from their coverage of White Michelle Williams’ pregnancy and recent engagement to Hamilton director Thomas Kail. Of course our own Allison made sure to squirt you right in the face with Eau De Escándalo the second you walked through the door in her coverage, so you already know that what People failed to mention is that Michelle and Thomas were both married to other people when they met on the set of Fosse/Verdon. While no one could ever accuse us of being in the pocket of Big Publicity, Page Six claims that People probably left out the good parts in exchange for those museum quality 8 x 12 glossy photos of Michelle, Thomas, and Michelle’s engagement ring, strolling hand in hand in finger on the streets of New York City.

Page Six reports:

Many media insiders raised their eyebrows on Monday evening when a cheery piece appeared on People magazine’s web site announcing the news that Michelle Williams is pregnant and engaged to “Hamilton” director Thomas Kail.

But the piece — which features a family-album-worthy “paparazzi” shot of the happy pair — conspicuously neglected to mention the fairly juicy fact that both Williams and Kail were in serious relationships with other people when they met just a few months ago.

The omission led tabloid veterans to speculate that Williams’ camp slipped the exclusive to People on the condition that the weekly keep mum about the potentially embarrassing circumstances of their happy union.

As Allison reported, Thomas directed 5 of the 8 episodes of Fosse/Verdon which began filming in November of 2018. Michelle’s divorce from musician Phil Elverum, whom she secret married in July 2018, was announced in April 2019. Thomas was married to actress Angela Christian from 2006 through some unspecified time in 2019. That leaves them plenty wiggle room for some hot unprotected director/muse sex with someone other than their respective spouses.

Page Six also took umbrage with People’s inclusion of a quote from Michelle about never giving up on love after Heath Ledger died. Page Six says the quote was taken from a July 2018 Vanity Fair story and that Michelle was talking about Phil, but People made it sound like she was talking about Thomas, even though they hadn’t even met at that time. I’ll add that People including a wholesome sounding anecdote about Michelle’s 14-year-old daughter Matilda being the one who set them up, is also eye strain inducing.

Page Six also pointed out that the timing of this pregnancy/engagement reveal is suspect, what with the Golden Globes being just around the corner (you’ve got to love the kind of energy Page Six is coming into 2020 with).

Adding to the intrigue, the item seems timed to appear right before Sunday’s Golden Globe ceremony — so that Williams’ bump doesn’t grab the headlines that night.

Michelle is nominated for Best Actress in a Limited Series for her portrayal of Gwen Verdon, an actress who was repeatedly cheated on by her director husband, a role we now understand perhaps should have gone to Angela Christian instead.

If People’s puff piece was supposed to distract us from inspecting Michelle’s bump at the Golden Globes they’ve made a grave error. Now we’re going to be looking even more carefully trying to figure out just how many months along she is. I hate math, but I’ll do it for just a whiff of that sweet, sweet scandal. The People ploy didn’t work at all. Michelle would have been better off just coming to the GG carrying a giant purse and a bag of groceries.
