Camila Cabello Issued An Apology After A Bunch of Racist Tumblr Posts Of Hers Resurfaced

Oh Camila, we barely knew ya. Just as she was beginning to emerge in my mind as “that one with all the hair whose always doing the most with that goofy looking guy, didn’t she used to be in Fifth Harmony or something” from the straight up “who?” she was a year ago, Camila Cabello has finally done something I will remember her for. Yesterday, Camila #tooktotwitter to issue a statement, apologizing for something extremely vague. It seems, in her youth (Camila is all of 22), Camila had used “horrible and hurtful language” which, as I’m sure you can understand, was deeply embarrassing for her. An odd thing to post apropos of nothing, however, the apropos of it all came two days prior when a Twitter thread titled “exposing camila cabello’s racist and downright disturbing tumblr reblogs” went viral. And it’s a real fun bag of surprises.

According to The Cut:

The thread, which went up on Tuesday, features a series of screenshots taken of the deleted account “vous-etess belle,” believed by the creator of the thread to have belonged to Cabello. Pictured in the thread are reblogs of several racist, xenophobic jokes and posts that use the N-word. One reblogged meme pokes fun at Rihanna’s 2009 assault. The posts appear to be from 2012 and 2013.

Newsweek elaborates:

One gif Cabello shared mocked and stereotyped a black child and another photoshopped image mocked a black female athlete. These posts, and at least one more, made references to offensive stereotypes about black people such as KFC and watermelons.

Many posts feature the n-word and some posts made fun of black, Asian and Mexican people. Cabello also shared a post that made fun of Rihanna being a victim of abuse after the singer was assaulted by Chris Brown.

Another post accuses Taylor Swift of “slut-shaming,” Rihanna of wearing “little to no clothing,” and also makes fun of Bruno Mars, Nicki Minaj and other rappers.

Here’s Camila mea culpa. It’s vaguer than Justin Bieber’s recent admission that he too had said “hurtful things” when he was “young.” I guess Camilo’s dictionary goes from “racing form” to “rack”, skipping the word “racist” all together.

Here are a couple of the Tumblr posts. I particularly appreciate the juxtaposition between the virginal profile picture and bible verse, with the vileness of the posts. Chef’s kiss!

This isn’t the first time Camila has had to address The Ghost of N-Words Past. ONTD has a large repository of instances of Camila’s racist and homophobic old tweets, Facebook activity, and hacked text messages in which she called her former Fifth Harmony member Normani the N-word. No wonder there was no love lost when Camila unceremoniously quit the group.

I don’t know that Camila’s diluted apology is going to do enough to get her over this hump. We know the girl can put in the hours! If she can dedicate a fraction of the effort towards making meaningful amends as she made trying to get us to believe she and Shawn Mendes have seen each other in their underwear, she might have a fighting chance. But she’ll always be “oh right, that one” to me.
