Prince Andrew Went To The Queen’s Pre-Christmas Turkey Lunch

Queen Elizabeth held her annual family-only pre-Christmas turkey lunch and tree-trimming extravaganza today at Buckingham Palace today. As expected, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan were no-shows, because they’re on a hiatus from royal functions until next year. But the rest of Her Majesty’s immediate family were there. Like Prince Andrew, who probably walked in to lunch and caused at least one person to whisper, “Ah look, the turkey has arrived.

People magazine points out that Andrew’s appearance at The Queen’s pre-Christmas lunch today was technically his first royal event since announcing he’d be stepping down from royal duties back in November (after his flaming carriage wreck interview with the BBC). The Queen’s lunch isn’t a royal event in professional sense, but it is an event where all the members are photographed arriving and coming together. Prince Andrew drove himself to the palace, which is ironic considering it reportedly took three people to drive him out.

Andrew’s daughter Princess Beatrice also showed up for lunch, albeit in a different vehicle. Probably a good idea. If things got awkward, she could always make up some excuse about needing to be at a pizza party in Woking and leaving

It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Andrew would get an invitation to lunch. Despite being a 59-year-old public relations nightmare, The Queen reportedly loves Andy so, so much. So I’m sure she had an extra-special plate set aside for him. But even The Queen probably didn’t want him around when the turkey was carved. There’s no way she could trust Duchess Camilla to hold back from saying, “You would!” when Andrew requested both breast and thigh.

Although I’m sure that would be far from the most awkward moment of the day. Prince William and Duchess Kate showed up with their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Kate didn’t have to worry about William pulling any in-car PDA, like offering his arm as a headrest or driving with one hand on her thigh. Because William and Kate showed up in separate cars. William drove George, who got to ride shotgun, while Kate drove Princess Charlotte and Louis.

Each arrived with a man in their car, which I’m guessing is probably a bodyguard. So clearly, either Kate can’t stand the thought of William sitting inches away from her, or they had to split cars to accommodate their security detail. Although TMZ does point out that they all managed to arrive in the same vehicle last year. Hmmm. Personally, I think the real mystery here is why they didn’t find a compromise that allowed them to travel together with their three kids and two extra passengers, and remind everyone how down to earth they are. Then again, maybe they weren’t able to source out a wood-paneled rust-damaged 7-passenger 2006 Dodge Caravan in time.
