Emma Watson Is Glad “Self-Partnered” Has Become A Thing To Some People
Gwyneth Paltrow just nervously shifted in her seat and instructed an intern to find out more about this Emma Watson person. It’s about to be Calm Down Drink Time at the Goop offices, because Gwyneth could be worried that people are still talking about Emma’s vaguely new age-y idea of being consciously coupled with yourself. But she probably doesn’t have to worry. Emma is once again talking about the frilly term she made up to avoid saying the word “single,” and it sounds like she wasn’t seriously looking to be the next actress-turned-relationship expert when she made it up.
Last month, 29-year-old Emma Watson confirmed she’s not seeing anyone seriously at the moment by telling British Vogue that she’s “self-partnered,” a term she uses instead of saying she’s single. The reason being is that she’s at a point in her life where people expect her to be married or be pumping out kids, and that she’s definitely not even close to that, but that it’s fine.
E!’s The Rundown decided to ask Emma about being self-partnered at the Little Women premiere in New York. Emma was asked how she feels about starting a single lady “revolution.” According to Emma, her revolution was kind of an accident:
“I literally said it as a throwaway comment, thinking it would go no further. And then I woke up the next morning, and I’m getting a hundred – like, my phone is blowing up, and I don’t know why. So all my friends are messaging me being like, ‘Self-partnered, this thing’s gone crazy!’ I’m so happy people feel empowered by my stressful moment. It’s great.”
She added that she’ll always identify as self-partnered, even if she does find herself in a relationship. Because it’s more about your relationship with yourself rather than your relationship with another person.
Not only is that deep enough to make Gwyneth sweat a little, it’s also a very good excuse. Eventually Emma might find herself in a relationship with someone who isn’t wingardiuming her leviosa. And she’s got the perfect way to let them down easy as her personal assistant puts their toothbrush and sweatshirts into a box.
“I’m so sorry, but it’s over. Don’t worry – it’s not you, it’s me. Literally. It’s me – I’m self-partnered, remember? I just don’t have the time to dedicate to the both of you, and I can’t exactly break up with myself, now can I?”
