A Drunk, Crying Tom Holland May Have Helped Keep Spider-Man In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
A few months ago, we learned that Sony, who owns Spider-Man, was possibly going to pull him from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which Disney owns, after negotiations stalled. People were outraged! Eventually Disney and Sony came to an agreement, and Spider-Man remained in the MCU. Apparently the road that led to such a joyful conclusion included a drunken phone call from Spider-Man himself, Tom Holland, to Disney CEO Bob Iger.
Tom appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to promote his new movie Spies in Disguise. But of course they got to talking about the biggest news story that Tom has ever been pulled into, Sony and Disney’s Not Without My Spider custody battle over Peter Parker. Tom says he was at the Disney fan event D23 when he heard the news that Sony was thinking of keeping Spider-Man all to themselves, and he was “devastated.” But rather than go online and post a picture of Spidey crying to Instagram, or tweeting #WONTSOMEBODYTHINKOFTHESPIDEY?, he asked for Bob Iger’s email address.
“It was awful. I asked if I could get Bob Iger’s email because I just wanted to say, ‘Thank you, this has been an amazing five years of my life. Thank you for changing my life in the best way and I hope that we can work together in the future.’ I got his email and I sent him the email and he responded very quickly saying he’d want to jump on the phone.”
So Bob Iger called Tom Holland. The only thing was, he didn’t give Tom much of a heads-up, and when it came time for Bob to make the call, Tom was drunk at a pub with his family. And drunk Tom got emotional.
“I’m three pints in, haven’t eaten much, and I get a phone call from an unknown number and I have a feeling. I’m like, ‘I think this is Bob Iger, but I’m drunk’…I weeped. No, I didn’t weep! I did. I was really emotional because I felt like it was all coming to an end.”
What I learned from Tom’s story is that Bob Iger makes dreams come true for actors who email him out of desperation. If Mena Massoud is seeing this, he might want to also consider asking for Bob’s email or phone number. I feel like appearing in a movie that made Disney more than a billion dollars affords you such information. If Bob can help save Spider-Man, maybe he can help save Mena’s career. I bet Mena won’t even take the call from inside a pub on quiz night.
And here’s more of Tom (along with Will Smith) at the Spies in Disguise premiere last night in Hollywood.
