The 2019 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Has Officially Been Cancelled

Well folks, it’s the end of an era. Pump out a spritz of sticky sweet Eau So Sexy Dream Angel eau de parfum for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. According to USA Today (fitting), the annual parade of culturally confused be-winged Angels has officially been cancelled this year. The American flag on Leonardo DiCaprio’s yacht is flying at half mast today.

It’s been a tumultuous couple of years for the company which prides itself on the ethos of No Fatties Allowed. First of all, Fenty exists. And sales of scratchy pannies have been way down for some time. Last year VS parent company L Brand’s president and chief marketing officer, Ed Razek, ultimately retired after surprising absolutely no one by proudly proclaiming VS would never welcome trans or plus-sized women. And the CEO of VS lingerie division quit the same week after only two years on the job. Now VS says it’s time to “evolve” the marketing of the brand, a move celebrated by millions of cold, naked chickens all over the world.

L Brands, the parent company of the lingerie retailer, has officially canceled the 2019 show. “We’ll be communicating to customers, but nothing that I would say is similar in magnitude to the fashion show,” CFO Stuart Burgdoerfer said during the company’s third quarter earnings call. The brand said the decision was part of a move to “evolve the marketing of Victoria’s Secret.”

“Given the decline in performance at Victoria’s Secret, we have substantially pulled back on capital investment in that business while we focus on ensuring that our merchandise resonates with customers,” L Brands said in its Q3 earnings report.

This cancellation has been a long time coming. Back in May, the brand had this to say about the show.

“Fashion is a business of change. We must evolve and change to grow. With that in mind, we have decided to re-think the traditional Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show,” the statement read. “Going forward we don’t believe network television is the right fit.”

Honestly, I had all but forgotten this thing was still being broadcast on television. The first VSFS aired way back in 1995. And if not for the VSFS, we may never have gotten Life-Size 2 starring former Angel Tyra Banks! Oh well, nothing lasts forever. Except for all of the millions of discarded VS bras and pannies, rotting away in our landfills, and polluting our waterways. It won’t be missed, but it was a helluva ride.
