Seeing Baby Yoda Brought Werner Herzog To Tears

If you’ve spent any time at all on Cher’s internet this week, you’ve probably seen the Baby Yoda that makes an appearance in the pilot episode of the Disney+ Star Wars show, The Mandalorian by now. Baby Yoda is the breakout star of 2019 and his adorableness has got many grown adults all up in their feelings. That includes Wener Herzog. It turns out that in addition to Kim Kardashian’s ass, puppet babies are very much his kink (intellectually, of course). In an interview for Variety, Werner says seeing Baby Yoda on set made him cry, calling the little guy “heartbreakingly beautiful”. And please remember, despite starring in a Star Wars TV show, Werner’s never even seen a Star Wars movie before!

Even if, like Werner and me, you’ve never seen the show, and don’t plan on handing Disney one single solitary dime for the pleasure, you have to admit — The cute is strong in this one.

According to Variety and every single unnecessarily angry Star Wars nerd on the internet, Baby Yoda isn’t actually the same Jedi master from the movies. He’s the same species but not the same OG (OJ? I’m out of my depth here folks).

Named for his resemblance to “Star Wars” icon Yoda (although fans are pretty adamant this is not the resurrection of this beloved character but a new member of the elusive species altogether), the infant’s reveal in the pilot episode was so shocking that it was described by the Oscar-nominated Werner Herzog as “heartbreakingly beautiful.”

Here’s Werner getting all misty eyed about the Baby Yoda puppet.

I can tell the lady interviewing him thought Werner was about to slip and give her a scoop with a spoiler the way she got worked up with “HEARTBREAKING HOW?!?!?“. Lady, Werner’s not about to accidentally tell you Baby Yoda gets gobbled up by a sand worm in episode 3, chill. Werner’s taking about the heartbreak that is an inextricable part of the human experience, and the awe of creation and connection shared by all thinking and feeling souls. I think. He could just mean whatever the German word for “squeee!” is (its sussäuglingehnsucht, I think) but forgot how to say it in English.

Seriously though, he’s right. Baby Yoda is hella sussäuglingehnsucht! I might actually pay for Disney+ if it was the only way to watch the inevitable Star Wars Babies show. If Baby Yoda is this cute, just imagine how cute a little Baby Chewbacca would be! No wait, I’ve seen the Star Wars Holiday Special. Let us never speak of that idea again.
