Jennifer Lopez Says She Wasn’t Paid Up-Front For “Hustlers”–Worked The Job For Free
Jennifer Lopez knows this is her goddamn chance and she is not going to let it slip through her fingers. When else could she possibly become Oscar-nominated or even an Oscar-winner? For The Back-Up Plan? For Second Act? I think the fuck not. But Hustlers is her shot. And campaigning season is starting up, so JLo is doing the damn thing. Did you know that she wasn’t paid for Hustlers? She did it out of her love of art about strippers who drug and rob men.
Jennifer is GQ‘s Icon of The Year and so they talked to her about Hustlers. And this interview is thick with potential reasons to vote for her. Remember when Leonardo Di Caprio almost got raped by a bear so he could win an Oscar? This is like that except not unnecessarily over the top.
JLo told GQ that she is a serious actress and she does not do things for the money. She already has so much of it! When it came to Hustlers, she agreed to do it for free, because it was such an important piece of work led by women for women with women. JLo said she just wanted to make the movie so she produced and starred in it for free… ish. She obviously got paid eventually, saying, “at least, not up front.” Insert “get the money up front” stripper’s joke here.
“I do things because I love them. I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers. I did it for free and produced it. I bank on myself. That’s the Jenny From the Block. I do what I want, I do what I love.”
JLo also said that Ramona was an amazing character to play and it was “empowering”. That girl who she’s based on but according to the stripper herself acted nothing like her will be so pleased to hear that.
“She was so self-sufficient. For me, who grew up with my sister sleeping in the same bed, and then went from one relationship to the other, playing that character, and having to be that independent and in charge, I was just like, “God, this is so empowering.””
She also promoted her upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show with Shakira:
“I feel like it’s an amazing platform and one of the biggest in the world to put out whatever message you want to put out there… I feel that it’s a great thing to have two Latina women in Miami headlining the Super Bowl, and what we could do with those 12 to 14 minutes to make people understand our worth and value in this country.… I think it could be a really beautiful celebration.”
I’m sure JLo is also doing the Halftime performance for the art of it all and the “amazing platform” and the “beautiful celebration”, and so like this movie she will not be accepting payment. …Right?
