James Van Der Beek’s Wife Has Suffered A Miscarriage

Exactly one week ago, it was reported that Hilaria and Alec Baldwin had lost their fifth child, and now we’re learning that James Van Der Beek and his wife Kimberly are no longer expecting their sixth.

James was one of the contestants on the 28th season of Dancing With The Stars, which is where he and his wife Kimberly announced she was pregnant with their sixth child. James and Kimberly explained that they chose to broadcast their first ultrasound on television, because they had experienced miscarriage in the past, and wanted to fight the stigma surrounding it. Much like their decision to announce the pregnancy on TV, that’s also where James announced that Kimberly had suffered a miscarriage. He let everyone know in a pre-taped segment before dancing on yesterday’s show.

“My wife Kimberly and I went through every expecting parent’s worst nightmare. We lost the baby. The little soul that we had expected to welcome into our family took a shortcut to whatever lies beyond. You never know why these things happen, that’s what I’ve been telling my kids. All you know is that it brings you closer together, it breaks you open, it opens up your heart, it deepens your appreciation. It makes you more human.”

He also claimed that his wife encouraged him to continue competing on the show after finding out the news, and he dedicated his performance to her:

“Kimberly, I love you. Kimberly, I’m dancing for you, I’m dancing for us, so here we go, babe. Thank you for pushing me out on that dance floor. Thank you for everything you do. I don’t know how you do it. Five kids. You’re amazing.”

Because not everyone watches Dancing With The Stars, James also broke the news on Instagram with a sad post featuring his wife in a hospital gown, accompanied by their oldest daughter Olivia. He didn’t explain what happened, but did say there was a “scary, horrific threat” to Kimberly’s health.

Wrecked. Devastated. In shock. That’s how we’re feeling right now after the soul we thought were going to welcome into our family in April… has taken a short cut to whatever lies beyond this life. We’ve been through this before, but never this late in the pregnancy, and never accompanied by such a scary, horrific threat to @vanderkimberly and her well-being. Grateful that she’s now recovering, but we’ve only just begun unpacking the layers of this one. Thank you to all of our friends and co-workers (and dance partners) who have shown up for us so beautifully during this time. As many of you have said, “There are no words…” and it’s true. Which is why in a time like this it’s enough to know that you’re there. Grieving AND counting our blessings today.

Prior to the show, Kimberly implied something was up on Instagram by writing: “It was a TOUGH weekend. Extra thankful right now to have help with my kids. Keeping these cuties happy as can be while I replenish at home.

It was a double bummer for James last night, as he and his partner Emma Slater were eliminated. I know reality TV is fake and the results have been predetermined months ago by a super-smart ratings-coached lab rat. But still! The judges couldn’t have waited a week to eliminate James? If they could keep awkward potato Sean Spicer around for as long as they did, surely they could have given Dawson a break and thrown up an 8 instead of a 6.
