John Legend Has Been Named People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2019
Last September, John Legend won an Emmy Award for his work on Jesus Christ Superstar, Live in Concert. And upon doing so, he became the first black man and tied for youngest man (with Robert Lopez) for the prestigious and much revered career achievement known as the EGOT. And for fourteen months, his Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony were the crown jewels of his trophy case.
But today, John’s cleaning lady has been instructed to dump his EGOT collection in a box next to the Halloween decorations in the garage. For he has recently been bestowed with the greatest honor a male entertainer can achieve: People’s Sexiest Man That Lived This Year!
People magazine made the announcement yesterday evening that they have decided John Legend is the sexiest man of 2019. Arthur Read might be shouting that he was robbed, but People is very specific that this is about the Sexiest Man, and not Cutest Cartoon Aardvark. This also marks the third time a coach from The Voice has been named the Sexiest Man Alive. Adam Levine took the honor in 2013, and Blake Shelton got it in 2017. Hmmm…I’m starting to think that part of People’s judging criteria is the ability to look hot while rotating 90 degrees in a padded leather armchair.
John’s Sexiest Man designation happens at the same time of the release of his new less-creepy version of “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” I’m a little disappointed that his publicist didn’t push for a cover shot of John reclining in front of the fire with a Santa hat covering his junk, and a little gingerbread house with the words “SHE HAS CONSENTED TO THIS” in icing on the roof. You gotta get in that holiday branding while you can. But I guess John in a suit and John rising out of a pool is fine too.
As for how John feels about being named the Sexiest Man Alive for 2019, he tells People:
“I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure. Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title. I’m [also] following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!”
It’s true – no one should have to follow Former Sexiest Man Idris Elba. They should have skipped a year.
