Ricky Gervais Will Return To Host The 2020 Golden Globes

The 2019 Academy Awards went hostless this year and shaved a couple minutes off the usual running time of 18 hours, and they ended up pulling some decent ratings. This year, the Emmys also went hostless, but their ratings were toilet-worthy. Going hostless is clearly a risky move that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t want to take, especially when everyone is hammered at least 40 minutes before the Cecil B. DeMille award is brought out. So they’ve decided to go with a tried-and-true formula by bringing back Ricky Gervais.

Save for the 1995 Golden Globes (when it was hosted by John Larroquette and Janine Turner), the Golden Globes remained hostless from the years between 1944 and 2009. In 2010, they asked Ricky Gervais to host, and that’s when the Golden Globes went from “That ceremony where actors get drunk” to “That ceremony where drunk actors nervously avoid eye contact with Ricky and pray he doesn’t brutally drag them live on television.” Ricky hosted three years in a row, took a break for three years while Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took over, then returned to host for a fourth time in 2016.

Deadline is reporting that Ricky is coming back to host the 77th annual Golden Globes. Ricky released the following statement confirming that he’ll host, but also that you better tune in on January 5th, 2020, because it’s the last time you’re ever going to see him do it.

“Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

NBC and the HFPA were considering several comedians to host the show, but they kept circling back to Ricky. Sources tell Deadline that initial discussions with Ricky went well, and they eventually offered him the job and he accepted last week. NBC, the HFPA, and Dick Clark Productions (who produces the show) all released statements on next year’s host, and all of them sound very excited. The CEO of DCP had this to say:

“In a world where many award shows are opting to go the no host route, the Golden Globes are going all in! It’s going to be a great night.”

That absolutely sounds like the kind of foreshadowing you hear at the beginning of a horror movie where someone announces, “Look, an abandoned cabin in the woods! That looks like a nice spot to stay the night while we wait for our flat tire to get fixed.” This is Ricky Gervais. No topic is off the table. There’s probably already a note open on his computer with a rought draft of a joke about how Kevin Hart is an example of why it’s so important to always properly secure your child into their car seat. It’s a good thing Ricky doesn’t believe in Heaven or Hell. Because he’d surely have a ticket waiting for him down south the second he takes a long sip of his beer, takes aim at one of his previous targets, and says the words, “So, Ben Affleck had an interesting year…
