Whitney Houston’s Ex-Girlfriend Robyn Crawford Has A Book Out About Their Relationship

The Whitney Houston Estate has giant, bloody calluses on their hands from vigorously milking coin after coin from her memory. Well, now it’s someone else’s turn to make a check off of Whitney’s memory. Enter: Robyn Crawford. Anybody who is even vaguely familiar with the life of Whitney Houston knows who Robyn Crawford is. Robyn was Whitney’s best friend since childhood, and it was long rumored that they were girlfriends. The Whitney documentary confirmed that, and now Robyn has confirmed it while telling her story in her memoir A Check For Me Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston.

Robyn’s memoir isn’t out yet, but People got pieces of it where she writes that she first met Whitney in 1980 at summer camp (DUH!) when she was 19 and Whitney was 17. Robyn told Whitney, “I’m going to look out for you.” From then on, they were joined at the hip, heart, brain, and coochie. They lived in lesbian heaven together for only a couple of years until Whitney landed a record deal with Clive Davis, and closed her vagine to Robyn, because they were living in a gay-hating world and knew it would be hard for them to be together.

“We wanted to be together,” says Crawford, “and that meant just us.”

Whitney ended the physical part of their relationship early on, soon after she signed a record deal with Clive Davis at Arista.

The singer broke the news by giving Crawford a gift of a slate blue Bible one day in 1982.

“She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore,” writes Crawford, “because it would make our journey even more difficult.”

“She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us,” says Crawford, “and back in the ’80s that’s how it felt.”

And so, she says, “I kept it safe. I found comfort in my silence.”

Cissy Houston also didn’t like Robyn and threw her signature CissyIsNotAmused face (with a side of LezzingOutIsWrong face) at their relationship. Robyn writes that Cissy didn’t think it was natural for two women to be that close even though she and Whitney were that close. Even after Whitney supposedly put a stop to their sexin’, they remained that close and Robyn was the maid of honor at her wedding to Bobby Brown.

Many of Whitney’s friends and family said that she was sexually fluid, and Robyn co-signs that.

“We never talked about labels, like lesbian or gay,” writes Crawford. “We just lived our lives and I hoped it could go on that way forever.”

“Whitney knows I loved her and I know she loved me,” says Crawford. “We really meant everything to each other. We vowed to stand by each other.”

Robyn, who is raising two children with her partner, says that she wrote the book to lift Whitney’s legacy and to share the story of their friendship.

Yes, I know I made that A Check For Me joke up there, but I get it. Robyn didn’t get a say on how she was portrayed in the Whitney documentary, so she wants to tell her side. It also fills me with the sads thinking what would’ve happened if Robyn and Whitney got to be together and Bobby B never came around to coke shit up (and yes, I know Bobby B claims Whitney is the one who coke’d up their world).

I only watch Dateline NBC for the murder stories and Keith Morrison’s soothing Christmastime voice, so them doing a non-murder story is weird to me. I imagine that as I’m watching I’m going to wait for a grainy shot of a summer camp as Keith Morrison’s velvety voice tells us, “It was a warm July evening, and as they cuddled in their cabin, a teenage Whitney whispered into Robyn’s ear, ‘Will you murder my doody bubble with your finger?'”
