Dolly Parton Says That The “9 To 5” Sequel Probably Won’t Happen

Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda were in talks to create a sequel to 9 to 5. Rashida Jones was supposedly working on the new script with original writer Patricia Resnick, and the sequel was going to be about a new class of ladies who deal with a shit boss and get help from Dolly, Lily, and Jane on how to take him down. But it turns out the script and the timing are making things difficult. So it’s on hold for now. Dolly said that the three of them (and I’m sure both of Dolly’s boobs were consulted) couldn’t agree on a script.

According to ET online:

According to Parton, she and her former co-stars — Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda– have “dropped that whole idea.”

“I don’t think we’re going to do the sequel,” Parton, 73, shared. “We never could get the script where it was enough different than the first one, and that one turned out so good.”

If it’s a script problem, Lily Tomlin is married to playwright, Jane Wagner, who wrote The Search For Signs Of Intelligent Life In The Universe. I know this because I accidentally showed my brother’s porn while doing a presentation about it in college. I took a VHS tape that he labeled as WWF Wrestlemania ’92 and taped over it with The Search For Signs. I didn’t record over the whole thing, and had no idea what was at the end of the tape. So at the end, it cut to two enormous boobs flapping in the wind. All I could say was, “It’s not my tape.” That said, it’s a brilliant play and maybe she could help with the script?!

I also get that these three legends are currently busy. I mean, Jane and Lily are working on Grace & Frankie, Jane keeps getting arrested, Dolly is currently doing a Netflix special, and she has a Christmas play opening in Boston next month. But even if they don’t make a sequel to 9 to 5 , Dolly says that they may end up working together on something different.

However, that doesn’t mean that fans of the trio of celebrated actresses are out of luck entirely. As Parton explained, they are all still down to collaborate in the future.

“We’re thinking we might do a completely different thing together, Jane, Lily and I,” Parton shared. “We may do something different altogether, but I don’t think we’ll continue with [the sequel].”

This is a little strange to me. You mean that Hollywood actually cares about the integrity of the story and chose not to move forward anyway because they love milking money out of a classic? Hmm… I’m still not convinced that the evil overlords of Hollywood are going to do the 9 to 5 sequel anyway and replace Dolly, Jane, and Lily with Anna Faris, Anne Hathaway, and Zooey Deschanel. Yes, they’re all a lot younger than Dolly, Jane, and Lily in real-life years, but are pretty much the same age in Hollywood years.
