Kelly Ripa Responds To The Backlash She Got After Describing Her Son As “Chronically Poor”

On Tuesday, Kelly Ripa appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and outed her 22-year-old son Michael Consuelos as a “chronically poor” person who was finally experiencing “extreme poverty.” Kelly appeared to be half-joking, because of course the son of a morning show multi-millionaire and hot actor father probably isn’t squatting in an abandoned boxcar and fighting over a can of beans with his roommates, Scrappums and Hobo Jones. But she did really lean into the whole “LOL my son is poor” thing by joking about how desperate Michael was to get his annual $20 Halloween envelope from his grandparents so he could keep the electricity on.

Kelly’s story got many side-eyes. For example, some people on the internet didn’t think it was so cute for a very rich person to be joking about the kind of “poverty” situation that their offspring was living. Kelly has something to say to those haters.

CNN says that Kelly hopped into the comments of the following Instagram post featuring herself and Michael on the set of what appears to be a film school TV project.

This comment caught Kelly’s eye:

“Did Michael drop out of school? Last night on Kimmel you made a reference he used to go to school 🙂 did he ever have a job? Sure are getting a lot of slack for all the talk about him?!”

Kelly decided to respond, and she’s definitely not sorry about telling that whole Poor Michael story. Kelly responded:

“Michael goes to college and is a senior and works full time. He is in his first non parent subsidized apt with roommates. I’m used to getting a lot of slack because people love to have fake outrage over something they didn’t see. They only read a headline and wag their tired fingers. I didn’t grow up privileged and neither did @instasuelos [Mark Consuelos]. We work and we expect our kids to as well. And the fact that a pack of fools want to bitch about that, I say let em.”

So I guess Kelly is more angry at people who were outraged that she and Mark weren’t showing up at Michael’s apartment with a gift basket full of cash and blank checks and apologizing for making him live with – gasp – roommates. Kelly really didn’t address the people who thought she might have been exaggerating a little by describing Michael as poor or living in extreme poverty. Although I think maybe Kelly has been so rich for so long, that any living situation would look like extreme poverty. She probably walked in to his apartment, looked at his fridge, and passed out after realizing it didn’t have a built in iPad that tells you how many bottles of VOSS are inside. And when Michael told her there was no rooftop lap pool, she shrieked, “Oh my god, the poverty of it all!
