Francis Ford Coppola Also Thinks That Marvel Movies Are Trash

Francis Ford Coppola, the man who directed Captain EO, the WORST Star Wars movie ever made, has decided to get into the debate over what can be classified as “cinema”. Francis is with Martin Scorsese on this one, and thinks Marvel movies don’t count as cinema because they have nothing to teach us. He’s even went a step further saying that Marty was being too kind. Francis thinks they’re “despicable” and urged them to get off his lawn immediately.

Yahoo News reports that while in Lyon, France, receiving the Prix Lumiere award for his “contribution to cinema”, he was asked for his thoughts on Martin’s recent remarks.

“When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration.

“I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again,” the 80-year-old filmmaker said.

“Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”

At which point Francis smoothly readjusted his beret, tucked his baguette securely under his arm, hopped on his bicycle, and pedaled down the cobblestone street while strains of La Vie En Rose played on an accordion rose into the dusky night air. I wonder if the fact that Francis sounds like he’s been sucking on sour grapes might have something to do with the movie, sorry, the film he’s currently working on, being the most expensive of his career.

Coppola also said he was working on his biggest project yet: “Megalopolis”, a film about a utopia, a project he has nurtured for two decades.

“I would say it’s the most ambitious film (I’ve worked on) — more than ‘Apocalypse Now’. That’s the problem,” he added.

“Apocalypse Now”, his 1979 war epic starring Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando, is notorious for the vast amount of time and money it ate up during production.

“I think it would cost more than ‘Apocalypse Now’,” said Coppola. “It would be the biggest budget I ever had to work with.”

Francis probably saw how much money Avengers: Endgame made at the box office was as all, “And you’re telling me they didn’t actually have to go to outer space and stage an actual space war to make this thing? Shit. They’re never going to let me build a actual Megalopolis now!
