Oprah Has No Regrets About Not Having Children Or Getting Married

And really, why should she when she’s got dogs in hats!

Oprah is on the cover of People this week and once again opened up about her decision to not have children and not to get married to her man of over 30 years Stedman Graham. And no, she’s not crying into her piles and piles of money about not getting married or not having kids. Oprah says she has no regrets and is living her best life with her dogs in hats, Stedman, billions of dollars, and her custom made marble and onyx tub.

According to People:

“I have not had one regret about that,” says Oprah Winfrey on her decision to not marry nor have children.

Oprah talked about how her decision to not have kids came from the years on her talk show, watching the shitty relationships between parents and their children due to mothers and fathers not taking the job of parent that seriously. Oprah was working 17 hours a day, so she didn’t have the time to fully nurture a child in the way that she thinks a child should be nurtured. And I’m not saying her interview with Dina Lohan influenced her decision. I’m just saying they’ve met.

“I realized, ‘Whoa, I’m talking to a lot of messed-up people, and they are messed up because they had mothers and fathers who were not aware of how serious that job is,’” she says. “I don’t have the ability to compartmentalize the way I see other women do. It is why, throughout my years, I have had the highest regard for women who choose to be at home [with] their kids, because I don’t know how you do that all day long. Nobody gives women the credit they deserve.”

Oprah also says that creating her Leadership Academy For Girls in South Africa helped fill some of her maternal instincts, and that not all mother/child relationships have to look conventional. And I agree with this, in fact, if Oprah wants to become my mom, adoption papers are already filled out.

“I have not had one regret about that. I also believe that part of the reason why I don’t have regrets is because I got to fulfill it in the way that was best for me: the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa,” she says. “Those girls fill that maternal fold that I perhaps would have had. In fact, they overfill — I’m overflowed with maternal.”

It’s not shocking that marriage and babies are not on Oprah’s list of favorite things. Oprah has has talked in the past about how her relationship with her own mother was complicated and that she had a lot of trauma growing up. Plus she’s a billionaire with dogs in hats. Who needs babies and husbands when she can spend her time dragging the president, and smoking the good shit while she eats her organic homegrown avocados. Not Oprah.
