Angelina Jolie Says That Her Divorce From Brad Pitt Was A “Complicated Moment” For Her

In an interview with French magazine Madame Figaro (via People), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil aka Angelina Jolie,44, talked about what she was feeling when she split up with ex-husband Brad Pitt in 2016. Those feelings include “hurt” and “lost.” She neglects to mention that she was probably relieved that there was a little more room in which to move around the chateau. They have six kids together! They probably also had a substantial waitstaff. That’s a lot of people in one manse!

Angelina, who apparently doesn’t want to get married again and already talked about feeling “cornered” in the past, says that her “complicated moment” of a divorce left her a stranger to herself and that she didn’t “recognize myself” anymore. Hint: you’re the pale one in the monochromatic outfits.

During the couple’s separation, Jolie said she felt “smaller, almost insignificant, even if it wasn’t necessarily obvious,” adding, “I felt a deep and genuine sadness, I was hurt.”

Seriously, she was all sorts of upset and initially unable to find her way out of the woods of marriage failure.

“I had lost myself a bit,” she explained of the moment when her “relationship with Brad was coming to an end.”

But now, she’s looking to the future and life with their six kids (daughters Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and Vivienne, 11, and sons Maddox, 18, Pax, 15, and Knox, 11) without dad getting mad and going ballistic on airport tarmacs. She’s even managed to identify herself again. Seriously, it’s hard to miss the pallid woman in all the black evening wear.

The actress, who stars in the upcoming film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, told the outlet that while she doesn’t know what her destiny holds, she is in a “period of transition, like a homecoming, a return to [herself].”

The star expressed that having the chance to “reconnect with this humility and this insignificance” has helped to point to the good things she has in her life.

“All these things settle in you and remind you of how lucky you are of being alive,” Jolie explained.

And on the red carpet of the Maleficent premiere and surrounded by her kids, Angie was asked what kept her going in times of marital dissolution.

At the Los Angeles premiere of her newest movie, the actress spoke to PEOPLE about her love for her family. When asked where she got her strength from, Jolie sweetly said, “My kids.”

Of course they did. There’s a ton of them and they can accompish everything – from dealing with the press to ordering the lawyers about to vetting film scripts. Those six kids are the power behind Maleficent’s throne!
